LOVE YOUR BODY

This week, I am happy to be speaking about the BODY and why we love it. Many of us have a love/hate relationship with our own bodies based on age, weight increase or decrease, health issues, diseases and dis-eases, mood, and more. Let's face it, no matter how beautiful your body is, there has been at least ONE time in your life when you felt a little hate for it, right? Maybe you were a week before your period (ladies), and the bloating just got on your last nerves. Maybe you had a severe acne breakout and you did not feel so beautiful because you were seeing more bumps or dark spots than your normal skin tone. Maybe you were pregnant and felt very fat and un-sexy because you lost your sex drive and/or was too tired to get in the mood. Let's not leave the men out -- maybe you got a little richer and started over-indulging on those beers and then you looked like you were five months pregnant and you saw another guy with a 6-pack. Maybe you were going through a low period in your life and started abusing your body with alcohol, drugs, over-eating, etc. And since men have two heads, maybe your lower head was going through a "slow period" and you felt a little insecure. Almost all of us have seen someone with an unbelievably incredible body and felt a tad insecure about our own body...it happens. I could go on and on, but I am sure you have been there (at least once in your lifetime). In all honesty, it is pretty normal to have that on and off feeling about our bodies, and when it comes to body consciousness, we are our worst critic. It does not matter who is telling you how great your body is...if you feel (at that time) that your body is not beautiful, they may as well be speaking to a wall. Put those instances and nuances aside, can you really say "I LOVE MY BODY" and mean it?

For me, loving my own body came with loving and accepting myself from a very early age. I grew up on the skinny side and inherited small wrists and calves (and the slimmer genes) from my father's side of the family. When everyone in my neighborhood used to tell me that I am walking on my hands because my calves were noticeably slim (not because I was literally walking on my hands), I just smiled and said "Galang bout yuh bizniz and leff mi cyaaf dem. Betta cyaaf dan cow." Even now when folks tell me "Oh My God, your wrists are sooooo small," I just smile and tell them to buy me custom-made bracelets. When fat or big-boned girls tell me how skinny I am (because they are looking company), I tell them that at least I can touch my toes and don't have to worry about obesity. And these days, when I am getting more mature and seeing very visible changes in and on my body, I just say "WOW" and keep it moving. You see, I have more appreciation for my body now than I ever did, and I have always loved my body. I have taken care of it over the years and I know that my body is healthy, fit and beautiful. I have always been very flexible but have traded in the cartwheels, hand-stands, back flips and walking on my hands because with age comes

timidity. These days, I push myself by trying to master yoga postures and by staying active. I get a kick out of it when I prove that I am fitter than many decades younger than me. I really get a thrill when I pass myself in the mirror and smile because I love my reflection.

As a female, you will either move from having a coca-cola bottled shape to becoming more of a pear or God forbid, an apple if you do not take care of your body. As a male, you will most likely start looking like your pregnant wife if you are not careful. In an age where the images that our children are seeing in the media are so air-brushed, augmented, lifted, lipo-sucked out (new word alert!) we have to start teaching them to love, respect and accept their God-given bodies. As parents, we also have to lead by example and we have to feed them right. Childhood obesity has been on the rise for many years now, but THAT is another topic.

A beautiful body does increase self-confidence. Feeling good about your body is a great way to start feeling good about your overall self. You do have the power to change your body. If you are not loving YOUR body, start doing whatever it takes to get it beautiful so you can start loving it and then you some more.

Celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month with DC's Seniors was the BEST Way to End the Month of June

On Thursday, June 30, the Washington Seniors Wellness Center was transformed into a Caribbean Village as “Connecting Cultures” – an inter-generational event in celebration of Caribbean American Heritage Month was held. Spearheaded by ERFSC’s director of communications, Rosie Peppy Parke (who is of Jamaican heritage) and WSWC’s interim executive director, Elise T. Nicholls; the event was more exciting than anyone could have imagined. “This is the most fun I have had in years; the Caribbean volunteers are so warm and the food is delicious” remarked one of the over 150 seniors who attended the event. The other comments were along the same lines and the smiles on everyone’s face were additional evidence that the event was awesome.

Seniors enjoyed four hours of nonstop Caribbean music, Caribbean entertainment, Caribbean fashion, Caribbean food, and Caribbean vibes from the many Caribbean volunteers. Hosted by (according to Ms. Nicholls) "the multi-talented Ms. Rosie Peppy Parke who has rightfully earned the name of Ms. Peppy,” the event featured a performance by Ms. Senior DC 2011, Emma P. Ward who showed the younger ones that being fit is important at every age. Her energetic performance to a Michael Jackson song had everyone applauding and her beautiful personality was on display for the entire evening. Steelpannist, Lennard “Sweet Pan” Jack, Jr. who is of Trinidad & Tobago heritage, had the crowd dancing to his wonderful sounds for an hour, and DJ Hector Clarke of Mystic Vibes 6.0 (Jamaica) made sure that the dance floor was kept busy until the very end. Other performers included Chardelle Moore, Ms. Caribbean Metro 2009 who recited her Dominican poem which was a hit. Ruth Ann Brown, a Jamaican reggae singer living in Maryland treated the seniors to her wonderful and sultry voice, and Moye Stephenson who is also Jamaican, performed a poem made favorite by Jamaica’s Louise Bennett. The Caribbean volunteers represented from Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Dominica and ranged from ages 21 to 50. According to one volunteer, “the seniors were so fit that they almost wore me out. I had more fun with them than at a Carnival party.” Food was provided by Pimento Grill -- a Jamaican restaurant located in SE, Washington DC.

Dr. John Thompson, executive director of DC Office on Aging insisted on attending the event despite other commitments and reassured the seniors that his office remains committed to ensuring that the District’s seniors are well taken care of. ERFSC’s executive director, Mae Best and ERFSC’s Director of Senior Services, Lisa Bryant also provided greetings and spent the evening having a great time with everyone in attendance. According to Ms. Elise Nicholls “this event was the best the Center has hosted in a long time. Viewing the photos from the event is a great way to relive the joy we felt at WSWC on June 30. We are truly connected for good.” As promised by Ms. Parke, the event was indeed “IRIE!”

It is NOT Deja vu...this happened to me before!

Aaay sah! A wha dis faada? Look like dem set sinting pan mi to rhatid...A wonda why ME so salt? Typically that is what one might say if they were in a situation like the one I am in right now. But not me...remember me saying that this will be a wonderful vacation for me and I will keep smiling? I love to keep my word, so YES, I am smiling even while I am shaking my head at the "is this really happening to me again?-ness" of it all. I am also remembering my friend, Sue saying to me "Rosie, why YOU always have issues when you travel?" and remembering that most times when this happens to me, I am traveling solo. Fact is, I am not the one who has the issues when I travel, but traveling woes seem to "follow me" on my travels. Maybe I should have taken that UK job offer after all? Kidding! I nuh ready fi live ova yahso yet despite how much I enjoyed my time here. Anyway, I digress...Yesterday, I spent the loveliest and maybe the longest last day in London with friends and fans. I wanted to have a more quiet last day so I would not feel tired when I got back to the States but I was having too much fun with friends I had not seen in 10 and 12 years, and the final interview I did for PEP Talk! was pretty awesome. I finally went to bed at 1am London time and set the alarm for 5:15am because my taxi was coming to get me at 6:00am. I hardly slept because I planned to sleep on the 8 hour flight and I was also anxious to get back to my life, so I found myself waking up every hour on the hour in that very short night. Naturally, I woke up before the alarm went off and since I am a seasoned traveler, I know to check my flight status before even washing my face. Can you imagine how outraged I was when I saw that the flight was delayed until 1:00pm? well, outraged is a very strong word...I actually cannot remember feeling anything but the desire to crawl back into bed because I was soooooo sleepy (and a tad thankful that I could get some more sleep). I must have called the taxi driver at least 5 times because the flight kept getting delayed and delayed BUT we were finally off to Gatwick for a 4:20pm flight. Absolutely NO hassle at check-in because I had checked in from the night before. When I got ready to pay for my extra bag, I was told that my debit card was canceled...even that did not phase me because I realized it was MY mistake for not notifying my bank that I was traveling to Europe, and by canceling it, they were protecting me. Luckily I had a credit card which I NEVER use and that took care of that because even though I am a preferred US Airways traveler, they would NOT let me travel if I did not pay for the extra bag! I was almost skipping in the airport because I really was ready to get back home. I spoke to almost everyone in passing in my new British accent and was having way too much fun with my own antics. I spent time window-shopping and could afford to buy the loveliest key chain I ever did see for a dear friend and a "bashment" fan for my mother with my last 12 pounds, because you know how expensive anything at the airport is, right? RIIIIIIGHT! Finally, we were assigned Gate 21 and off I went, waiting in the very long line and almost sitting on the floor until a nice young man offered me his seat (he liked my smile). At 4:30pm, before we all started asking why we were not boarding, we heard via intercom "Ladies and gentlemen, we regret to announce that flight 337 has been canceled..." You can imagine what took place after right? Chaos, cursing, pushing, shoving, threats, etc.? NOPE...It was unbelievable how calm everyone was (especially moi). I just sat there and waited and kept smiling, because I had a premonition it was going to happen, and that little voice inside kept saying "Rosie, just change your flight until tomorrow" and I did not listen! Anyway, all close to 200 of us would have to go back into England (we had officially left the country) showing our travel documents. We had to reclaim our bags, and would be placed on tomorrow's flight. This time, the perks were there so we were housed in the Hilton Gatwick and would get a free dinner and breakfast (served between 4:00am and 4:30am). Now, you tell me, why would anyone of us want to wake up to eat breakfast at 4:00am when we are IN the airport and do not need to check in until about 7:00am? Aaaay sah! Throughout all of this, I was wearing heels, my bags were heavy, I was tired, hungry, and wanted to go home, but I was also patient and kept smiling. Now that I finally have not one, but two beds in my hotel room, I CANNOT sleep because mi waan go a mi yaad inna MY bed. When all is said and done, I cannot say that my vacation was not adventurous to the very end, and I can honestly say that I now have visited England not once, but twice.

Traveling to take my 2 week vacation

OK, so I packed my bags and said goodbye to my house and was feeling great about my 2-week vacation. Nothing or no-one could do or say anything to make me stop smiling. My friend, Tonya came to pick me up and I smiled all the way to DCA; kept smiling all the way through the security gate; and still kept smiling even after I got to MY gate and they told me there was a gate change. After walking for about a quarter mile in my high heels and heavy-ish pocket book to a gate I had passed before and they told me that my flight to Charlotte, NC was delayed and I will "more than likely miss my flight to London" did I get upset? Hell NO!!! I kept on smiling, walked about what had to be a half mile to Special Services, stood in the line for 15 minutes before I was hand-picked from the line by the nicest Agent in the world! She told me that my shoes and hairstyle caught her eye and she liked my overall style, but that was not the matter at hand...even though that made me smile wider, I really wanted to be on the plane to London! She advised me to take the new delayed flight and TRY to make the flight to London since I would be in the same terminal and would have to maybe run from Gate B1 to B12. Even though I was in heels, I could do it -- I have ran in heels before...never with a heavy pocket book and my laptop bag, but because London was waiting for me, damn skippy, I would do it! I walked back the half mile to the Gate and sat there patiently munching on my Auntie Annie's pretzel and forgot the food I had bought in my haste and hungry state when I first arrived at my original gate. Something inside nudged me and told me to go and check the time for the flight (again)..."Ms. Parke, the plane is delayed and will not get to Charlotte until 6:17pm so there is NO way that you will make the flight to London." Did I get upset, angry or stop smiling? NOPE! I walked back to the Special Services desk and back to my original representative and told her what I was just told. She mentioned that she was just about to come and look for me. As I stood there patiently with a young white lady who was also facing similar issues and looked at the over 60 faces in the everlasting line who were also waiting to find out their traveling fate, I wished for a hot second that there was another way to get to London instead of flying because frankly, I just wanted to get there! Two agents started helping me and the young white lady (I forgot to ask her name) whose final destination was Dublin. They found one seat from Philly to Heathrow (I was going to Gatwick) and the nice young lady offered the seat to me since she would still not know how SHE would get to Dublin. After snagging that flight for me, the agents now had the task of getting me from DCA to Philly. After checking and making about 12 phone calls, they came back and said to me "Ms. Parke, even IF we get you to Philly, you will more than likely miss your flight to Heathrow because of weather conditions." Did I lose it at that point? NEGATIVE...I kept on smiling. "So what exactly are you telling me? I HAVE to get to London today" I remarked. My option was to either go to Philly and overnight (at my own expense) and TRY to catch the next flight to Heathrow (whenever that was) or "come back tomorrow" and do this all over again. I opted for "tomorrow" and kept on smiling, counting my blessings and feeling bad for the young lady who was going to Dublin. Maybe good things do come to those who wait, because when they gave me my new boarding passes, they told me they loved my smile and winked at me telling me to enjoy first class to Gatwick "tomorrow."

I was in vacation mode and did not want to go home to start cleaning house and getting comfy again when I had left that life behind me and did not want to see it for another two weeks. My friend, Tonya came and got me and I ended up spending the night at "Villa Martin" with her and her family. I had such a great time and I am still smiling as I sit here "tomorrow," finally in Charlotte waiting for the next 4 hours to catch my flight to Gatwick. Look out London, here I come...first class all the way! :-)

Edwin Coke Memorial Service

All of us were shocked, shaken and sad when we learned of Edwin Coke's brutal slaying in his beloved Jamaica. Up until this day, many of us remain in denial that he was taken from us on November 29, 2010. Edwin Coke was a GOOD man -- I could use so many adjectives to describe him, but I will leave it at that. He was good to his family; he was good to his friends; he was good to his community; he was good to his professional contacts; he was good to everyone he met in passing. Yes, Edwin Coke was a GOOD man.

On a personal note, Edwin did a lot for me both personally and professionally during the time I was blessed to know him. He gave me counsel on business matters; he offered sound advice on relationship matters; he helped to promote my business; and he was very frank about his admiration and respect for me. He became one of my favorite men not very long after we met, and he was consistent in being good. I LOVED that about him. Edwin was a star and he shone brightly wherever he went. Unlike so many, he never kept valuable things to him -- be it ideas, personalities, investments, or even words of wisdom. He shared...always.

We are all blessed to have known Edwin and some of us are more blessed because we got to see the more FUN side of Edwin. Oh what a side that was, LOL...He loved life, he loved people, he loved to have a good time, and he lived a good life. As Edwin said to me one day, "mi nuh shame of it, mi nuh proud of it...mi jus accept it!" I know it is hard for us to accept, but he WAS taken from us. Now we must move on with our lives, always remembering him and celebrating life as he did while he was among us. He would want us to do that because he was also very unselfish. As one person said to me "Edwin is in heaven doing God's taxes." She is so right. May the soul of Edwin Colin Coke rest in eternal peace.

Family,

This week I am keeping it all about PEP! I have been pondering about creative ways to try to squeeze all we have done over the last 5 years in this ONE issue, and I just could not do it. I did not realize how much we had accomplished until I started looking back, and then I had my "OMG" moment. I have a lot of people to thank but will not attempt to name everyone in the interest of space. Needless to say, I cannot forget Jamila Stanley who introduced me to Marco Forbes, who introduced me to his world of managing a night club in DC, and gently nudged me so that I could get in the swing of things. Much love to the friends who believed in me and had my back when I told them that I was on to something that the DC area needed -- Jah Prince, Ty, Judene, Keisha, Roxan, Delta, and Dena; the sponsors who worked with me and gave up their money when I went to them with my passionate plans of "connecting cultures, one riddim at a time;" Darren Green, Zita Hawkins and the crew from Zanzibar who made me have the Sky Club as my home every 3rd Thursday for about 3 years; all the poets, musicians, and authors who loved the vibes and helped me to change the face of networking parties; the DJs such as Jah Prince, Mystic Vibes, Mr. Muzik, and DJ Spyda who played sweet, addictive music at each event; the media people like Dr. Kofi Kissi Dompere, Paul Mack, Papa Wabe and Tony Carr who allowed me and my crew to at times take over their studios and jam up their phone lines; and the avid supporters like Takiyah Worthy and Pamela Oguagua who never missed an event!

As I spent most of this week going through actual albums and online photos, I had a permanent smile on my face and shed many tears of joy reminiscing on the good Caribbean RIDDIMZ days. Even though I have long since lost the interest to do monthly networking parties, I remain sentimental about that period which was the beginning of PEP. I am also reminded of some personal issues I was going through at the time when I started RIDDIMZ and am glad I did not give up or give in when all the odds were against me. See, what you may not know about me is that I prefer to go in with all my heart, and risk having it broken than to leave my passions unfulfilled.

So, as I move ahead with an unbroken heart and bigger plans for the next five years, I hope that you will continue to support me and say a little prayer for PEP as we continue to do our best to connect and communicate in creative ways. We know that patience, passion and persistence will take us from good to great and we have tons of all those three very important things.

Tropical Paradise

It has been two weeks since my last e-Newsletter and before you ask -- NO, I do not feel guilty for not checking in. I was on vacation and loving every minute of it so "work" was the last thing on my mind. During my time off, I got to experience the very beautiful and peaceful island of St. Lucia and my larger, more beautiful and vibesy, Jamaica! I am still shaking my head at the incredible energy that Jamaicans in general have -- they are truly "black people plus tax" in every sense of the word. In event event, I was literally in tropical paradise on both islands. The four days in St. Lucia was not enough but the one really great day I had exploring Sourfriere was enough to make me fall in love with the island. Being in Jamaica for a week was sheer bliss and I jumped back into my Jamaican "habit" like a well oiled machine. Even though I no longer live there, Jamaica will always be my HOME and truth be told, even though I just got back, I already miss home.
Reconnecting with family I had not seen in over 20 years and some I had never met before while in Jamaica was icing on the cake, so I am still on a high and counting my blessings that I was able to incorporate that during my vacation. Family is the most important thing to me (even the ones who get on my last nerves) so keeping them in my life and hanging with them despite geographical distances make me peppier than ever! Above from left are my cousin and second cousins who I could have passed on the street and not even realized we are related. At right is my Aunt, Dotty who I could not pass on the street even if I were wearing very dark glasses. Even though I had not seen her in about 20 years, she looks just like my mother and a lot like she used to back in the day.

During my time off I communicated with many folks both in the islands and back in the States -- to find out about their lives, culture, etc. and to keep folks updated on my "movements." After having one too many conversations, it dawned on me that many folks who live in places like St. Lucia and Jamaica want to flock to the USA for "greener pastures" -- sometimes by any means necessary, and many of us who now live in the "land of opportunity" dream of emigrating to islands such as St. Lucia and Jamaica that have friendlier people, a more peaceful atmosphere, beachers galore, excellent food, and the real greener pastures (I could go on and on...) As the Jamaican saying goes "wanty wanty cyaan get it, and getti getti nuh want it." Simply put it means that those who want it, cannot get it; and those who get it, do not want it. Never forget to count your blessings especially the ones we tend to take for granted.

While in Jamaica, I insisted on speaking patois especially when dealing with the vendors. "I am NOT a tourist" I told them, and they knowingly responded "Yeah, but yuh nuh live yah nuh more." While it may seem like I said it to keep the prices down (which I kinda sorta did), I also meant it when I said it, as I consider my visits to Jamaica returning home, and once surrounded by MY people, I speak in OUR language. A so it fi guh.

We are working on a trip back there next May for the Jazz Festival, so if you want to party with PEP, start saving your hard earned money. Below is a photo of me enjoying an absulutely amazing day in the town of Soufriere (notice the famous Pitons in the background).
Big ups to the management and staff of Coco Palm Resort in St. Lucia for taking care of us during our stay there; hail up to Don the driver for taking us around; hello to my Soufriere sidekick, Rachael for the exceptional day we spent together; and thanks to everyone who worked hard to ensure that my stay in St. Lucia was memorable -- Finiana, Ponsi, Wilson, and Andrea. This little island is definitely up there on my list of places you HAVE to visit.

So many people to thank who made Jamaica really nice this time: Adam McGregor, Marion Campbell, and the Sunset Beach Resort crew; Michelle of United Car Rentals; Tony Cobb of WRTN Radio 93.5FM; Marcia Deans of MVD Entertainment; the staff at Travellers Beach Resort; Carol McLean, Lyn Palmer and Neville (the Mobay crew); Aunty Dotty, Angola, Courtney, and the clan; and the folks (some pictured below) who rocked the Negril beach party on Sunday night...hilarious.

AweSome Autumn

"Vacationing" in Maryland at Herrington Harbour

I am sure I mentioned it to you before, but I have to say it again. Autumn in my favorite time of the year! It is also the time of the year when I always get a little under the weather (as soon as the season changes over.) Fortunately, that under-the-weather thingy does not last long and is now over. Anyway, for the last week or so when I was not feeling well, it was brought to my attention that I was acting a tad anti-social. Stupefied, I was like "Really? MOI?" and then I realized that I WAS in fact all into myself. I mean, who wants to be all up on folks when they are sneezing, coughing, having headaches, and feeling their eyes stinging, etc.? The trouble with being ME is that folks always expect a ray of sunshine even when it is storming outside. Don't get me wrong...I AM that ray of sunshine on any given day, but even though I have no problem with (almost) always exuding positive vibes, it should be understood that sometimes I just want to be left alone (especially when I am "sick.") Those of you who tend to be on the peppy side, can relate, and let's face it -- it comes with the territory. Those of you who rely on other people for YOUR happiness, need to get over yourselves and start creating your own good vibes. I am smiling as I write this so do not take this personal or think that someone has upset "The Peps." This is therapeutic for many people and fun for me. Besides, honesty is still the best policy in my book.

So, last Friday, I was fortunate to spend a lovely staff development day with the people who I work with on my "side hussle" (thanks for that one, Robert, LOL) at a location in Maryland. Trust me, we may as well have been on a small Caribbean island because the place was NICE and the vibes was sweet! Tropical flowers and plants galore; a beach complete with sand; Caribbean food; and so much more. The next time someone from the DMV area comes to me complaining about not being able to afford a vacation, my new canned response is "just look around YOUR area." Speaking of vacation, I am getting ready to take one out of the States and to REAL Caribbean islands. Can you tell that I am excited and showing off a bit? I wish I could take you with me, but there is no more room in my suitcase.

I just looked at my 2010 resolutions and was smiling when I realized that I have accomplished a lot even though I have not even attacked some of the things on my list. How are YOU doing with yours? Friday is October 1, and the start of the 4th quarter of 2010. It is also the beginning of a new fiscal year for many organizations. My wish is that you get back on track (if you have fallen off) and continue to work at your goals. What is not done today, will be done tomorrow...we just have to keep at it.

For The Love of Rosie

The year 2010 has been a very beautiful one for me. It is hard to remember the not-so-good things or obstacles which I encountered because these days I do not dwell on negativity. Truth be told, I realized about 5 years ago after going through a very bad event that once I come to terms with a bad "event," I am soooooo over it, but the good vibes live on and on and on!

Getting to 40 for me was just a way of welcoming a new chapter in my life -- a time to really LOOK at me and frankly, start doing whatever the raas I want to do. I had spent most of my life being someone who was always so interested in making sure others were happy, that I sometimes sacrificed my own happiness in the process. Dem days deh DUN and PUDDUNG! I plan to be a tad selfish and do for ME more. It will not impact what I do for others, nor will it change my personality and giving spirit, but I HAVE to do more for me because I can see the personal neglect at times. Besides, my new favorite quote is "I am responsible for my own happiness" and that "I" does not mean just ME -- it means everyone...go figure.
For the first time in my very adult life I honestly feel like I am getting older (not to be confused with aging). I remember turning 30 and still feeling like I was 22 because I had lived my life in a certain way for that time period and nothing MAJOR had changed. So much has changed since aged 30: emigration, student loans, marriage, relocation, solitude, divorce, dating, rebirth, remake, love, and ray ray and tay tay. All of a sudden, I am 40 years old; my son is approaching 21; I have someone in my life who I can honestly say I love with all my heart but I am not jaded or caught up in the rapture of love; I am realizing all of my dreams; and I am thrilled to KNOW that I am at a great place in my life. After a certain age, you really wake up and have no choice but to grow the hell up!!! I am so happy right now that tears are springing in my eyes!

On the physical tip: my boobs are not as high as they used to be; my butt is not as sexy as it used to be; my waist is about 4 inches wider; YES, of course, my shape has changed (duh) -- luckily I am still somewhat of a pear versus an apple (thank GOD!!!). Come to think of it, I am still the same size 4 I have been since age 20 (that is sweeeeeet). I am beginning to see small laugh lines around my eyes; I now have about 5 gray hairs; my skin breaks out for EVERY little thing; BUT I still look beautiful to me, and I feel beautiful on almost all occasions. I still turn heads nuff times when I am sauntering down the streets so mi know seh mi still hot, LOL. At 40, that is VERY important to anyone - man, woman or shi-borda.

I have a few very good friends in my life; some great friends; and I know that I am a great friend to folks. My family loves me, and is supportive of my very hectic lifestyle (hectic to them, but normal to me). I have a great job and my own business. I have a comfortable home and good health. I am blessed to have so much and more than most and I take pride in doing for and giving to the less fortunate. Life is really just beginning for me as I still have many unrealized dreams I intend to turn into realities.

I remain humbled that I was able to share my birthday celebration with a network of friends, and I am thankful for each and every person who sent me a text, an email, hit me up on Facebook, MySpace, Hi-Five, LinkedIn, Living In Black, and all the other social networking sites. I appreciate every call, every gift, every word of blessing and encouragement, every hug, every kiss, every big up, every present, and your presence at "ForTheLoveOfRosie" (if you were there).

I said I was going to celebrate for 40 days beginning August 20, but I am sure that I will be celebrating way after September 28 because I am still on a high and I have higher hopes for the rest of 2010.

I keep celebrating my birthday in 70s style because as soon as I put on that Afro and bell bottom pants, my energy is turned up by 20 decibels!

Celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month

This month, there is so much going on and we have "so much things to say." Yes, we are celebrating Caribbean American Heritage Month (CAHM) all of June, and those of us who have the Caribbean blood in our veins are naturally elated! Can you imagine getting an entire month to show our true colors?!! Yeah man, we a happen!

The Washington DC area -- an area known for its diversity and active entertainment scene is buzzing now more than ever with various types of "bashment," as Caribbeans are crawling out from EVERYWEH to enjoy the weather and summer festivities. Last weekend, CAHM was kicked off with the DC Film Festival and for me, it was just really cool to see so many I had not seen since "Wappy kill Fillup." I kid you not, I actually saw many folks who I had not seen since last year when were celebrating this very month, and you know that I tend to be in many places all year long! Why some Caribbean people move to places which have four seasons and party ONLY in summertime is beyond me, but I will leave that up to others to ponder on...smiling soooo hard as I write this, LOL.

At this time, I would like to stick a pin and big up Dr. Claire Nelson of the Institute of Caribbean Studies, Mwiza Munthali of Trans Africa Forum, Finiana Joseph of the Caribbean Professional Network, and Thomas Fontaine of the Caribbean World Bank and IMF staff (CAWI) for all the hard work they put into making the DC Film Festival informative, fun, and necessary. I checked out 2.5 films, and it was just great to be in the AFI Theatre and watching films that are not typically shown at the major movie houses. The fact that I was sharing the space with Caribbean folks and lovers of the Caribbean heritage made it even more special.

This weekend and coming week will also be filled with various activities celebrating CAHM, so if you are Caribbean, know someone who is Caribbean, or just have a love for the Caribbean, check out one, two, or few of MY picks in the events section below.

On May 29, I went to Herndon, VA to check out "Roots, Reality and Culture" which was held at the Jamaica Jamaica restaurant.

I went for the program which promised doses of roots, reality and culture, and of course the opportunity to see Ky-Mani Marley perform was another reason to attend the event. I knew that Ky-Mani was also going to be promoting his book "Dead Dad" but that was not the reason I went. I had heard passing remarks about the book -- many folks had much to say about Ky-Mani's motivation for writing the book, the state of his finances, etc. etc. but I did not care about all of that, as the Marleys business is none of MY business -- unless of course, it is about the great music the family tends to put out.

Anyway, while at the event, I decided to big up Ky-Mani and purchase his book. Do you know how it is when you kind of expect to be reading about one thing, but then you start reading about something entirely different? Yeah man, that is what happened to me...I started reading the excerpts from the book and was wide-eyed at some of the "secrets" that were being revealed...I am still reading the book.

Whatever (new) opinion you form of Ky-Mani after reading his book, understand that he is one cool brother and he has a right to tell HIS story!

Winning Women!

This week I was unpleasantly reminded of the power of words and how they can actually hurt more than a physical blow. I was also pleasantly reminded that based on different cultures, personalities, writing styles, tone, and a number of other factors; sometimes the intended meaning of the words which are delivered is different from what is perceived. Be that as it may (and in the midst of it all), I could not help but smile and admire a few of the women who were involved in this "power of words." We are much more similar than we think, even though we are all so different! As women, we tend to deal with many things in similar fashions; we expect to be respected, admired and loved for "me;" but at times, those feelings and actions are not reciprocated. As I said on my Facebook Status message "None of us are too big to admit that we have made a mistake. In fact, admitting that we have made a mistake makes us stronger women." You can quote me on that one!

This month as we continue to celebrate ALL THINGS WOMEN, I just want to wish every woman an extra special month. Many of you have not even taken the time to acknowledge other women for the great things they do, the super-woman they are, and the way they lead by example. I also hope you take some time out to focus on YOU and realize how important you are to the world we live in. My collective wish is that we all find it in us to pay closer attention to the words we say to others, especially when we are having a bad day. The days of blaming things on PMS, hot flashes, and a bad night's sleep are OVER. We have made significant contributions on personal and professional levels; we are charismatic, courageous and composed; we are talented, tenacious and temperamental; we are the mothers of civilization and through us, comes the future. Above all, we are Winners.

The Post Office Saga - a tale in English and Patois

This was an email I sent to my sister after having a crazy experience trying to mail off a package to her at the Post Office this week...after sending it, I was asked to post it for easy reading and a chuckle or two...your comments are welcome!

Hey, when I sent the first text yesterday I was actually joking with you, but I was pissed at hell for stopping at that ghetto post office where the service SUCKS!

Anyway, after standing in line for close to an hour, one of the two workers clocked out even though she noticed a room FULL of people. She came back and then asked folks who were picking up items to come to the front (at the time I was at the front of the line already so you KNOW I was pissed). I waited patiently and then she called a gentleman to come and work with me because she wanted to take her ass home. She then told me to get some tape to make the box stronger and I responded "Maam, the box is fine and WILL hold." She insisted and handed me the tape...it took me another 15 minutes to tape up the box. I approached the man who was real nice and he gave me the customs form to fill out and told me the package would cost $59.90 and would get to you within 7 days.

I felt a little relief, and den de phukking ooman from hell come back again and look pan de raasclaat bax and a come tell mi AGAIN seh de frigging bax naah guh hold. I said "Maam, you told me to tape the box and I taped it. The box WILL hold and if it does not hold, that is fine with me. Can we please move on since I have been here since 3:55pm?" She inspected the box and then proceeded to tell me that the box will NOT hold and that I HAVE to purchase one of their boxes for $4.99. I was mad, but at this point, I figured I may as well get this over and done, so I took the box and can you believe that NONE of the boxes they had could accommodate me putting your box into it to mail the package? She was like "Maam, you have to step aside and go to the OTHER area to deal with your package. By the way, we will stop serving the last person soon in the line and the Post Office has been closed since 5 minutes ago."

Mi look pan de bloodclaat ooman like mi was about to hop ova de counter and cratch har tinking tongue outa har dutty face. I was like "So, what does your statement about the Post Office being closed five minutes ago have to do with ME? I have been here since 3:55pm." She was just standing there with this dumbass look on her face, and by that time, I had just about HAD it, so I said "Ooman, yuh bloodclaat! Sir, thanks for your help but can I please have my forms back?" and I took my upset-self out of there before I felt the urge to kill that beeyatch.

Needless to say, said package is not yet mailed but my next attempt will be at a Post Office where the service is much better!

The Haiti Hope Love Project

For the last week, everything around me seemed to revolve around the importance of having good relations with family and close friends and finding a way to connect our past with the future. When I really needed help in finding out what is going on with this generation and how things were different in my Granny's time, I had several conversations with persons of different ethnic "BLACKgrounds." At the end of it, it came down to the fact that because we are BLACK, we all share the same history, issues and stories. Idiosyncrasies aside - It does not matter if you were born in Jamaica or Nigeria where we tend to be more aggressive, or if you are a Bajan who is a little more on the laid back side; when it comes to the value system that is inherently us, we all are fruits from the same judgment tree and we deal with things in similar fashions.

I was reminded of being in China when my group and I were walking in the street and we were followed by some Chinese folks who were fascinated by our dreads. I stopped and had a conversation with one young lady to find out why she continued to follow me, and she told me in limited English that I am "soooo different from the Africans here." At the time I could not understand what she meant but later found out that they have a bad opinion of Africans because they found them to be very aggressive and somewhat unapproachable. Back then, I told her that I was Jamaican and she smiled and said "Awwww, Bob Marley" and then I was on my Jamaican-pride trip and it did not even cross my mind to inform her that I am also an African (not that she would get it, anyway). The point is this - each time I hear someone highlight how bad and negative black folks are and can be, I know they are talking about the collective black...when a Jamaican does bad, it reflects badly on the black race, when a black American does bad, it reflects badly on the black race, etc.

As blacks, we KNOW that very many of our BLACK contribute and perpetrate the mess that is being said about us...it is time to flip the script! If we do not lead by example like those we pay homage to each February, how do we expect the negative stereotyping to stop? So, I am right back to the family and close friends issues. If you have one of those in your life who is guilty of tarnishing the positive image of blacks, tough love is closer than you think. We MUST find a way to connect our past with our future in a positive way!

I have lots of GOOD information below, so READ and prove "them" wrong again! Happy belated birthday to my son, Khani, Butta B, Kyanne Jackson, Dennis Wanliss and everyone else celebrating this and next week!

Cabin Fever during the back-to-back snow storms

It has been one week since I wrote about how short Black History month is already. Since then, those of us who live in the greater Washington DC area have lost days of being out and about due to the snow storms we experienced. We can still make up for lost time!

Hmmmm: snow outside my window

In case you did not get the memo, this area got two back-to-back snow storms and life was "confined" for about a week. I love the snow, but when I look outside my window and cannot even SEE my car, my "WOW" is no longer one of excitement - it is more to the tune of "WTF/H?!!!!". It was hard not to get cabin fever and since I am extremely hyperactive, I got it bad. I had spent about an hour in the supermarket in preparation for the snow storm so food was not scare in my house and I ate and ate and ate. If you see me and I look a little "buffer" than usual, blame it on snowmageddon!

On the upside, it was good to get some down time, but as much as I love watching movies, I found myself getting really bored and antsy. I just wanted to be outside! Since last Thursday, the first time I moved my car was on Tuesday of this week after it took us two days to get it road worthy. It took me almost three hours to go around my neighborhood for essentials (a trip that typically takes 45 minutes). There were no long lines in the post office or supermarkets since most people were inside, but the roads were HORRID, and I kept remembering the saying "be careful what you wish for."

Anyway, while I was driving on Tuesday and praying under my breath for guidance and protection, it dawned on me how fortunate and blessed we are. For the most part, we were all pretty safe during the storm - maybe power outages, a collapsed roof here and there, limited food in the house, a few cars damaged because folks would not sit their asses at home...but we have not experienced a real disaster so we have to knock on wood for that. The one thing I can say that the cabin fever did for me is that it got me to think harder about the fate of the people in Haiti. It was hard for me to not think about how many and how much they have lost to the earthquake, especially when they are living outside and we still have homes and the very basic human needs...please keep praying for them. Can you imagine what they would do to trade places with folks like me to have at least ONE DAY of cabin fever?

Prayers for Haiti

Family:

Since Tuesday, most of us have kept our eyes and ears locked to various media channels trying to catch any and every bit of news we can regarding the earthquake that shook Port-Au-Prince. It is heartbreakingly sad and catastrophic and the news is not getting any better! Many tears are being shed inside and outside of Haiti as we all feel empathy for the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere that has been constantly hit by natural and political crisis. I remember thinking "not Haiti AGAIN!" when I got the first email. It really saddens me that the country continues to go through so much.

They are estimating deaths of "hundreds of thousands" and the earthquake is reported to have directly affected about 3 million of the 10 million population. All we have to do is to keep praying, make donations and hope that in time, the country will be rebuilt. As for the spirits of the Haitians - that is different issue to consider but Haitians are very strong, courageous and resilient people so I pray for the best.

If you have never taken volunteering and donating seriously, NOW is the time to step up. Haiti needs your help...the world needs your help! Check below for a list of organizations you can donate to and keep your eyes locked for opportunities to travel to Haiti as part of relief efforts. L'union fait la force (Together we are strong).

If you live in the DC Metropolitan area, you can help Haiti by being a part of the Survival Kit Drive THIS Sunday January 17 2010 from 11am - 4pm at the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti in Washington, DC. The Embassy is located at 2311 Massachusetts Avenue NW, DC 20008.

Many of the items can be found at your local dollar store or even the One Spot in your local Target. Please spread the word to all because a MAJOR group effort is needed to get Haiti through this. Items needed are:

Baby formula (dry/powder), Baby wipes, Baby bottles, Diapers, Baby clothes, Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste), Hand sanitizer, Vitamins, First aid kits, Over the counter medicines, Socks, Blankets, Mosquito repellent, Flashlights, Batteries, Candles, Flip flops, T-shirts, pants, lightweight jackets, Non perishable food that's not in cans (seal-paks of tuna or sardines, for example).

Greetings,

I appreciate all of you who emailed with thanks regarding the breast cancer story I shared in my editorial last week. I am relieved that you did not feel overwhelmed by my personal "testimony" but I trust that by now many of you already know how I operate - I write from the heart with the hope that you will walk away with at least one point which leaves you with a feel-good vibe. I remain humbled by the outpouring of love I get from you sometimes...thanks! Please note that I am still lobbying for annual mammograms and all the necessary breast checks and will continue to do so long after October. For all of you who were reminded to go and do your mammogram, make the appointment and just do it, please! MVP - please read that last line again and do the right thing, before I call you out next week...LOL!

Since October is also National Family Health month, I want to draw attention to STRESS (the silent killer) which seems to be affecting everyone these days. Always remember that optimists handle stress better than those who feed on the negative and the darker side of life. Do not waste energy on things you cannot control such as the current economic climate; instead find ways to stay upbeat and step out with a plan, confidence and faith if you need to. If America or somewhere else is not working for you in terms of opportunities, consider spreading your wings. If your job is stressing you out, consider actively planning on that business idea you have had for years and work your way to becoming your own boss. If a mate, friend or family member habitually adds to your stress level, love them from a distance. Keeping your stress level under control is the key to mental well-being (and physical well being too).

Believe it or not, of late I am inclined to get stressed out easily. Maybe it is because I have two BlackBerries that keep going off or maybe it is because I have a son who keeps getting on my last nerves...it could be a number a number of reasons. Point is, to manage my stress, I try to socialize with positive people, those who make me laugh, and the ones who have a pleasant disposition. Sometimes I have to turn off both Blackberries and many times, I have to tune out my son and others who tend to be stressors - I always feel better when I reconnect with my inner self and find peace and serenity. I don't know what you are going through or what is making you feel stressed out, but consider practicing relaxation techniques, listening to soothing music, and performing acts of kindness everyday. I can bet you some serious dollars that those exercises will help you to sleep better, feel better about yourself and leave you smiling away your "stress."

CELEBRATING JAMAICAN HEROES: Embassy of Jamaica in DC Hosts Reception and Awards Ceremony

Heroes Day in Jamaica was celebrated this past Monday, October 19. It is a national holiday celebrating the seven national heroes: Paul Bogle, Sir Alexander Bustamante, Marcus Garvey, George William Gordon, Norman Manley, Nanny of the Maroons and Sam Sharpe who all fought for freedom, wealth, quality of life and so much more for the nation.

Last night (Wednesday, October 21) at the Embassy of Jamaica in Washington, DC, Ambassador Anthony Johnson and his team hosted a Heroes' Day Reception and Awards Ceremony paying tribute to five Jamaicans who were all born in 1909. The esteemed gentlemen created innovations, suffered major setbacks, racial slights, and other challenges but ended up the best in their fields and the first persons of African ancestry who held major posts in Jamaica.

Mr. Johnson took us on a colorful and engaging journey of the lives of Sir Florizel Glasspole - Jamaica's third Governor General; Theodore Sealy - first black editor of the Jamaica Gleaner; George Alphonso Headley - first black man to be recognized for his role as a cricketer; Aston Wesley Powell - founder of Excelsior Schools; and Robert Charles Lightbourne - established Jamaica's first industrial factory. The "fantastic five" would have been centenarians had they lived until today but their life stories, success stories and heroism cannot go unnoticed because "when you celebrate heroes, you are celebrating the best of you."

Not forgetting the present day heroes and "sheroes," Mr. Johnson aka "The K.C. Bully" commended and presented awards to organizations and individuals in the metropolitan DC area who have been doing exceptional work to advance Jamaicans and the Jamaican culture. Awards were presented to the Jamaican Nationals Association, Jamaican Association of Maryland, Leopold and Carmen Edwards of the National Coalition of Caribbean Affairs and Albert Huie.

Sorry I did not check in last week, but I was very much under the weather. Instead of working myself into a frenzy and using my creative juices to send out a newsletter or anything that would require too much effort, I decided to just chill and concentrate on getting better. Anyway, after numerous cups of green tea, lemon, lime, ginger, honey, soup, sleep and rest, and the medication I HAD to take, I am back! This week, I have a little bit more than the usual for you, so print this newsletter and try to read all the articles, or read it in stages!

Thanks to those of you who called, texted, sent FB and Myspace notes, and emailed to find out if I was doing better and having a happy birthday. I tried to get back to everyone but for obvious reasons, I was operating on "go-slow." If I missed getting back to YOU, please know that I apprecilove you!

Shout outs to Papa Wabe, Mr. Muzik, Donna Powell, all the Virgos and other folks who came out to celebrate Papa Wabe's 50th birthday at Ramshead in Baltimore on 9/11. The show was sweeeeeeeeeeeet and it was my pleasure to co-host with Donna Powell. Naturally, being a Virgo, it was also a birthday celebration for me too so I am glad I got that in before I caught that bug. It was great to see so many lovers of reggae hanging out the entire weekend of 9/11 - 9/13. Pressure Buss Pipe at Zanzibar was a great show, and the Crossroads Reggae Festival was nice!

Special thanks to my wonderful network of friends for coming out to celebrate my birthday with me last week at Bukom in Adams Morgan. It was a low key thing so do not feel bad for missing out...Inspiration Reggae Band kept the vibes real sweet. Tony Roy singing Happy Birthday to me was the icing on my cake. Much love!

Okay, so now that I have gotten all of that off my chest, I just want to implore you to watch the weather these days. Fall/Autumn is officially here so expect some hot and not-so-hot days. Just keep that light jacket close to you and get your allergy medication if you need them. Even though this is my favorite season of the year, I am aware that it is also the tricky season - when summer is transitioning into winter: sneezing, colds, sore throats and other health irritations typically go along with the 50-60 degree temperatures.

MARCIA DEANS:
The Beauty and Brains Behind the Miss Tropical Paradise Beauty Pageant

Born in St. Catherine, Jamaica WI, Marcia V. Deans migrated with her family to England in 1963. At a young age, Ms. Deans knew she wanted a career in modeling, so modeling and dance classes became a part of her existence.

After schooling and training in England, Ms. Deans returned to Jamaica. Shortly after her return, she applied for a job modeling for Elvy Ralph. While living in Jamaica, Ms. Deans entered the 1976 Miss Jamaica competition placing as first runner-up.

Ms. Deans has gone from being a model to becoming a producer. Over the past 20 years up to the present, Ms. Deans has produced countless fashion shows at various venues in the New York area, as well as in the Caribbean. Forever reaching for the stars and staying ambitious, Ms. Deans felt the need to expand from producing to ownership, thus starting her own company in 1999 named MVD Entertainment which simultaneously premiered the 1999 Miss Tropical Paradise Swimwear Pageant.

Along with producing fashion shows, MVD Entertainment is involved with artist management, a modeling agency and various promotions. Since 2000, MVD has worked on promotions such as the annual Jamaica Day event sponsored by the New York Racing Association and Aqueduct Race Track.

Ms. Deans, who has experienced the joy of competing in pageants herself, has the confidence and sportsmanship required to help navigate through the daily hurdles in the modeling industry. These life lessons carried throughout her career helps in maintaining a higher standard in her company. Ms. Deans loves nothing more than to give other young women the same privileges and joy in achieving their goals that she was lucky enough to receive.

In addition to promoting her own productions, Ms. Deans volunteers her time and assistance to various charitable and non-profit organizations such as Nurse of Israel and Diabetic Research Associates for a Cure, Inc.

Jamaican Playwright, Trevor Rhone is dead at the age of 69

According to many, he is Jamaica's most famous playwright. He is known mostly for "The Harder They Come" and "Smile Orange" but he has written countless plays which were Jamaican hits.

The reggae movie classic, "The Harder They Come" - Jamaica's first feature film which showcased the island's pop culture was co-written by Rhone. He also helped to write the screenplay for "Smile Orange" which starred the magnificent Carl Bradshaw and highlighted some of the prejudices within the Jamaican tourist industry.

Born in 1940, Jamaica's Trevor Rhone died of a heart attack in Kingston, Jamaica on September 15. Mr. Rhone is survived by three children and a grandchild.

Condolences go out to Mr. Rhone's family. We are all very thankful for the great works he did while he was alive!

It has been a while since I made an entry in here. I just realized that it has been ages since I checked my myspace page! I guess with the advent of Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and all the others, we sometimes forget to stay tuned on the original sites, huh?

Anyway, I just got back from the Ward 7 Fitness and Wellness Retreat to Heaven House in Berkeley Springs, WV and it was FANTASTIC. Words cannot full express the marvelous time we had, so I will ask the ladies who were there to stop by and share their thoughts.

Upcoming Events You Should not Miss

Reclaiming Your Independence

Welcome to July and the second half of 2009. This is the best time to revisit resolutions/goals set at the beginning of the year. Perhaps some resolutions will not be met; perhaps some of them will be transferred to 2010; and perhaps some of them should not have been on the list in the first place. Be that as it may, independence is something that is within everyone's span of control, so consider spending the next 6 months in 2009 reclaiming your independence.

I invite you to think about some of the ways you can get back on track (if you have fallen off) and take control of yourself and your self. Oftentimes, we depend on others to make our lives worthwhile, and we fall into the trap of thinking that someone else controls our happiness...An independent person does not depend on others' opinions or guidance in conduct; an independent person certainly does not rely on others for their care or livelihood; and an independent person definitely understands that dependency results in allowing other people to manage YOUR life.

We are focusing on reclaiming independence in the following areas: Love, Finance, and Spirituality, so I hope my few words will be of some help to you. It not my intention to offend or point the finger at anyone. Also know that writing this helps to keep me on track, so we all benefit in the long run!

THE LOVE JONES SYNDROME:
So, you are in a great relationship and in love with your significant other who totally consumes you... In fact, you love spending so much time with your "Boo" that you neglect all the people and things that truly matter to YOU. Before you lose yourself in another person, remember that relationships are healthier when each person has personal time, personal projects, and personal goals. So, pull away at times, and take time to give yourself some TLC. Don't be afraid - real love will be waiting for you after you reclaim your independence and take care of YOU.

BECOMING FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT:
The vast majority of us dream of becoming financially independent. Actually, some of us dare not dream that big - we just dream of days when we are no longer living from paycheck to paycheck and are able to take a long vacation without hyperventilating about returning to the "real world." I am no expert on the subject of becoming financially independent, but I am educating myself on getting there real soon. One of the best things you can do for yourself financially is to live within your means. Don't splurge with your friends with money on dinners you cannot afford; do not spend all your money at the mall; and do not fall prey to many of the "get rich quick" scams out there. Get a financial advisor, spend wisely, and SAVE. It takes years, sacrifice, and money to become truly financially independent, but it is a journey worth taking NOW.

THE SPIRITUAL CONNECTION:
Oftentimes people get bent out of shape when SPIRITUALITY is mentioned. It does not mean you have to go to church, the Buddhist Temple, or get baptized (even though religion and spirituality can go hand in hand). Spirituality is really about getting to know yourself and finding a connection with your inner self, so you understand who you truly are. Finding that spiritual connection is one of the best gifts you can give yourself to be truly independent. Getting spiritual allows you to develop your independent style and make higher and better decisions of the heart. So, always take time for you and your spirit. Take time away from your hectic (or not so hectic) schedule to rest your mind and think about enjoying life in the moment. Take a spiritual journey by taking long walks on a beach or going on a long solitary drive sans the crazy music. Meditation brings you closer to your spiritual center, so it is something worth trying. For an easy fix, just take a couple evenings off, go home and shut down everything that creates the regular "background music", submerge yourself in the bath with some scented candles for a good 15 minutes, and be one with yourself - "whoooosaaaaaaah". A healthy spirit makes good for the heart, body, mind, and soul!

International Reggae and World Music Awards Report by PEP

Like last year, I had a great time at the 28th Annual International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA)! Due to attending the 747 Seminar earlier in the day, the extra traffic which came with the rain, and getting lost on the way to the IRAWMA, I almost missed the red carpet portion of the event. When I finally got to York College Performing Arts Center, I was very happy and relieved that the IRAWMA team was professional, efficient and polite. In no time, I had my media passes and found myself surrounded by beautiful hostesses and the stars of the night who were busy on the red carpet striking various poses and getting interviewed by media houses galore!
Like any other award show of this magnitude, there was the usual buzz, excitement and networking opportunities. It was great reconnecting with old friends and seeing some faces who I had only met through emails. Shout outs to Shauna Chin, Winford Williams of CVM TV, Maxine Greaves, Louis Henry of CPNTV, Fiona and Nicky Wright of Caribbean Vibes Radio, and Patrick Blair.

Despite a few technical glitches, it was still an entertaining show. Emcee, Tony Rebel showed his true comedic colors and kept the vibes nice! Rebel also gave a great performance when he sang his new song "Another Bill" and toward the closing of the show, he slid in two favorites which had the crowd rocking and singing along. The buzz words for the night were Obama and The Swine Flu and like everyone else, I have a hard time envisioning Rastamen like Tony Rebel and Mutaburaka with the swine flu...HILARIOUS!

The performances were great and I enjoyed them all. Though not a huge fan of soca, it was great to see diversity on the program and calypsonians Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose, and Alison Hinds were on point! Ms. Hinds had the men in the front row section in a frenzy when she started doing her "Roll It Gyal" dance and had to come back onstage to give them a last look at her sexy body! According to Emcee, Tony Rebel "She AT!"...translation - "she is hot!"

Machel Mantano beat Beenie Man and took the award for Most Outstanding Stage Personality. On Sunday night, Machel's performance would have been outstanding were it not for his CD skipping...I could feel his pain which was also visible. On collecting his award, Machel was sure to remark "Next year, I am walking with my band!" He also did not miss the opportunity to crack one at Beenie Man and said "Beenie, a de best white suit win!" Even though, Beenie's ex-wife, D'Angel always irritates me especially when she says "And sooooo!", I really enjoyed her performance and energy all night and have to give her kudos for always making me smile. OK, I must admit that she is steadily growing on me.
Lieutenant Stitchie still has incredible stage presence and his lyrics came even faster than they did when he was doing secular music. These days, Stitchie is jumping for Jesus so it is no wonder that he seems to be jumping higher and is friskier than ever! He, along with Elephant Man won the award for Best Gospel Song. I know it is hard to imagine Elephant Man doing gospel but that is the truth! Queen Ifrica and Tarrus Riley gave outstanding performances (no surprise here) and the "fyah mumma" won two awards - Best Female DJ/Rapper and the other which she shared with Etana for Best Female Vocalist. Even though Tarrus Riley's mic was not working when he hit the stage with a BANG, he made up for it when the engineers finally got it to work! Congrats to Tarrus Riley on winning Best Male Vocalist.

Best Poet, Mutabaruka was funny and gave a solid performance from his popular piece "Gimme Me Dis". Muta was quick to point out that back in the day when he was traveling barefooted, all the attention was on him. These days when he passes through airports and observe even the pilots having to take off their shoes, he cannot help but laugh. We were all laughing too...Talk about "poetic justice."

Brigadier Jerry's performance was a big hit and he along with Owen Dalhouse, Heavy D and Road Int'l won special awards for contribution to the music industry! Beenie Man aka Ras Moses closed the show out with his "Gimme Gimme" song but I enjoyed the performance from his little sidekick who did the Michael Jackson impersonation better. Beenie was more entertaining as he moved through the crowd and carried on with his antics.

The backing band for the night was Dean Fraser and Friends who lost to New Kingston Band for Best Backing Band, but Dean Fraser copped the award for Best Instrumentalist. Winners who were missing in action include Etana, Beres Hammond and Mavado who each won two awards.

You are charismatic, courageous and composed and among many other things, you are talented, tenacious and a testament to the saying "behind every great man, stands a great woman!"

In the five years I have lived in Washington, D.C., I have never seen anything like this before - the streets lined with thousands of pedestrians, all with one destination. We were a headstrong bunch, weathering frigid temperatures (about 12 degrees) with one resolve - to witness one of the most significant events of American history. Today, January 20, 2009, the United States of America would see the inauguration of the first African-American as President, Mr. Barack H. Obama.

I started out at 12^th and G after a botched plan to go to the Capitol Building. From there, I would travel along H Street to 18^th and then along 18^th to the National Monument. There were people everywhere! But at least this made the almost hour long trek easier to accomplish J (what’s that saying? Misery loves company? Yeh, something like that. hehe)

As could only be expected, there were many characters out and about to take in this historic event. Even Uncle Sam came out, on stilts no less.

Young, old, black, white, American natives, immigrants, muslims and christians all walked those streets to experience a day that surely we would never forget.

It was truly a day where the words that Obama had spoken throughout his campaign had really begun to resonate in very real ways. There was a sense of community, a complete sense of brotherhood (and sisterhood!), and underneath it all, a sense that all we really need is each other. Not enough can be said about the sincerity and kindness I received walking through those streets from complete strangers. So many offered to take pictures, help others over barricades and even offered their seats to those more tired.

As we strode along the streets, one by one, but altogether, it was a time to really take in the city. Solid stone buildings that have stood the test of time, juxtaposed to those newly constructed and even those still a work in progress, showing the progression and the change of a city. I couldn’t help but think of past events and how those before us had marched these streets and how they had felt at those very moments and that here I was, creating my own story. It was in that moment that I realised that no matter our differences, no matter our backgrounds, no matter where we come from or where we are going, inherently we all want to, and indeed can, become ONE – one voice, one people, one destiny, one greatness!

When we finally made it to the National Monument, I got a glimpse at what 2.5 million people could possibly look like.

If I had walked with thousands, there were hundreds of thousands of others who had parked themselves at the National Monument mere minutes before; and others, hours in advance. A virtual sea of people was before me! (and inconveniently between myself and the jumbotron).

But no worries… Though I could barely see the man, I could hear his words and feel each one of them in those around me. The moment had finally arrived, a moment in time so many had waited so long to witness. An event that would forever change the face and landscape of America, an event that would being all people together, an event that would inevitably usher in a new era of not only hope, but with it, endless possibilities. Emotions were bare – tears, embraces, smiles, laughter, clutched chests and applause. Truly a moment I was honored to experience and one which I shall never forget.

Family,

I think it is safe to say that 2008 has been a challenging year for all of us! Even still, how many of us can seriously spot the many blessings we have received despite harsh economic times, the loss of jobs, houses, and in some cases family members and close friends? I must admit that at times in 2008, I felt the pressure of hard times so often that I just gave up on shaking my head and said "whatever will be will be"! Now, as 2009 inches closer, I am hopeful that brighter and more beautiful days are ahead.

Outside of the things that we cannot control, many of us have spent much of 2008 complaining about "this and that" and "he or she" but have we really tried to do OUR best to ensure that our personal lives were less hectic, challenging, and free of drama? Did you take quality time out to detox, find your spiritual center, or just relax and block out some of the madness of the world at times? Did you sever ties with those people who tend to suck out all the air from the room, and never have anything good to say? Just in case you did not do the things that were very important to you in 2008, think of the new year as the dawn of a new day and another opportunity to complete unfinished projects and put things into better perspective.

I still have two resolutions from 2008 to complete but the only resolution that matters to me for 2009 right now is ensuring that the parts of my life which are controlled by ME have the elements of peace, love, joy, happiness and KUJICHAGULIA (self-determination). Everything else will fall into place in the fullness of time. At the end of it all, I am happy to say that I did my best to ensure that 2008 was a good year for me, and I am very excited about what lies ahead in 2009.

I wish you a 2009 filled with positive movements. I wish you peace, passion, and prosperity. I wish you success, good health, and showers of blessings and I wish you love.

The Spirit of Christmas

We are drawing closer and closer to Christmas and have a few days to go. A bunch of you are traveling as early as this weekend and are busy packing your bags so this is not the best time to give you a lot to read... short and to the point is the order of the day!

There is something in the air that is seemingly preventing me from catching the "Christmas fever" and I cannot put my finger on it. I thought that I would spend much of last week putting up my tree, decorations, and so on but I just kept procrastinating. Usually at this time of year, my holiday CDs are out and all loaded in my stereo but they are still sitting at the bottom of the CD stand and I cannot seem to even reach for them. In my going out and about, I have not seen much indication that Christmas is in the air, so perhaps many are doing the last minute thing or opting not to go all out this year...Where are the decorations? Christmas lights? People dressed as Santa Claus, etc.? I finally bought a tree yesterday and it was sitting in my living room up to 2pm and then my son and I decided to just do it. So we hung the tree and lights, and at last I feel the spirit of Christmas creeping up on me. For a hot second I was worried and thought that the Grinch had stolen Christmas in my camp.

On another note, last year, at this time, I had more than 20 invitations to holiday parties which at times competed with each other. This year many people are cutting back due to lack of funds/funding and the holiday parties are few. In spite of all of these "shortcomings", there is still reason to be happy, recognize that you are highly blessed and enjoy the season and all the VIBES it can bring whether you have funds to travel, decide to decorate or cook a full 10-course meal.

At this time of the year, there is much anticipation about holiday shopping, gift-giving, traveling, and home decorating complete with Christmas tree, lights, etc.

Before you start over-spending, just remember that come January, you will be sorry and broke and you may find yourself borrowing money from family and friends to pay off bills from this holiday season (believe me, I have been there)!

It does not matter where you live, we have all been experiencing financial hardships in 2008. People have been losing their jobs and homes in a heartbeat and in some instances, they have also lost their significant others because they have lost that home and/or job.

Our collective pockets have felt it at the gas station, supermarket, and when shopping for necessities and a lot of things we usually did spur of the moment had to be carefully cut from the budget. I know it is hard not to feel the Christmas breeze and the need to SPEND that typical goes with it, but this is the perfect time of year to make some last minute changes as it relates to your bad spending habits or you WILL take them into 2009.

I have already declared that I will NOT be purchasing holiday gifts for ANYONE this season. This does not mean that I will not be giving gifts - I admit that I am a sucker for the holiday season and enjoy gift-giving. Times are hard, dollars are scarce and so the gifts I give will cost very little in terms of money but a lot in terms of the time I will take to carefully select them for each recipient.

Frugality is the buzz word in my corner, and this includes decorations (I am getting ONE small Christmas tree and using the lights I had from last year); food (I will be making a very healthy Christmas meal with lots of veggies, fish, and no dessert); clothes (I have enough already and usually shop for winter in the summer); gifts and cards (will be made of creative words, warm hugs and smiles ); travel (already got the cheap ticket for my father to visit me); and entertainment (there are just too many holiday parties going on for me to pay too much to go anywhere).

I am not telling you to take my advice, I am just asking that you think carefully when whipping out your credit card or hard-earned cash this season. Apart from the spending, be careful about identity theft, the high interest rates on your credit card and your ability to repay the bills. If you do nothing else this gift-giving season, think seriously about whether you really need to purchase THAT particular item. Don't get caught up in the hype but do enjoy the holiday season!

On Saturday, I ventured to NY to check out the 4th Annual JAMROCK Vintage Fest featuring some of the best in vintage reggae and I think it is safe to say that a great time was had by all! It was a packed house, Squeeze ensured that the program flowed nicely and Sugar Minott, Cocoa Tea, Gregory Isaacs, U-Roy, Leroy Sibbles, Brigadier Jerry, Nadine Sutherland put on great performances. My favorite performer was Sugar Minott and my favorite moment was when the Active Dancers joined Gregory Isaacs on stage for his encore performance - golden!

I wish I could have stayed until the end of Cocoa Tea's performance but from what I saw, he rocked the house! Did not check out the after party because NY was COLD, but bigs up to Garvin from Revenge Media, Johann from Link Up Media, Phil, Teddy Laidley, Stan the Man, and Heru and Beverley who tagged along with me. Thanks to Beverley for hosting us this weekend, Buddha for the vegetarian dinner on Sunday and big ups to all who came to eat: Toya, Che, Danny, Shawn, Sabrina, and the usual suspects.

Giving Thanks

Ever since I moved to the States in 2003 I have dreaded Thanksgiving Season. For me it has always been the time of year when families, loved ones, and close friends get together to eat, give thanks, meet significant others, and just bond with one another in general. Because we never celebrated Thanksgiving in Jamaica and none of my family lives in the States (relatives all moved to Florida), I did not get excited as others did and always felt like a third wheel. Truth be told, while others animatedly spoke of their plans to visit with family and overindulge in every aspect, I remained kind of introverted and just wanted the season to be over because just at that point, I wanted to be with MY entire family and it was just not in the cards! To get over my sadness and connect with at least a part of my family, I traveled to Toronto, Canada a couple times to spend time with my big sister and my Mommy. In the end I would still remain thankful that I had the resources to travel and even though Canada in November is cold as ICE, I would feel the warmth from my family and come back to the States feeling super.

This year, I am staying put...mi naah guh nuh weh! I am very thankful that I have formed some very great friendships and am at the point where I no longer feel sad or homesick at Thanksgiving time. Matter of fact, for me thanksgiving has a lot less to do with eating some "wagga wagga" food and more with really setting aside quality time to give thanks for all my blessings, especially the smaller ones that are not so easy to spot. This year, I am thankful that I still feel highly blessed no matter what I am faced with; I am thankful that my family is alive and healthy; I am thankful that I have some good friends in my life who are "better than pocket money"; and I am thankful that I have an audience like you who make my passion work easier. I am thankful that we will have a Black President, thankful that the gas prices are down and it no longer costs me $62 to fill my tank, and I am extremely thankful that love is in the air all around me.

I wish you and your family a great Thanksgiving Season and I am reminding you to give thanks everyday and not just at this time. Reach out to those who are less fortunate so that they too can be thankful and have some faith in humanity. If you are traveling, please be safe and if you can find the time to feed those who are really hungry or share some food with the lonely next door neighbor, or the homeless man you pass each day on your commute to work, that would be a groovy thing!

I will be spending the Thanksgiving season with a wonderful and special friend and my son and having Thanksgiving dinner with Melissa Smith, her family and friends. Thanks to Melissa for allowing me to come to her place with my hungry belly (the second year in a row) to be fed and entertained while we play dominoes and cards, and bond with one another.

Happy Birthday to my little sidekick, Keisha, my sister, Melrose, Kevin Galindo from Toronto and my friend from High School, Beverley Gregory.

The Hot Seat for Barack and more!

I know that many of you are still smarting from the Barack Hussein Obama win...yeaaaaaaah! It IS kind of nice to have a distraction and something to celebrate after having to deal with the sorry state of the economy in recent months and that horrific campaign war! Whether you are black, white, or mixed, you HAVE to admit that Barack's win is what the world has been waiting for. I am in a surreal state of excitement and have an enormous sense of calm which makes it difficult for me to scream and shout and act like a stark raving lunatic but know that my insides are doing the Obama dance and I still chant "Obama, Obama, Obama"!

While many of us prayed but thought that certain people/groups would ensure that a black man does not become the President of the USA, Keith Tate of Diamonds Xcel refused to change the cover for his magazine and insisted that Barack Obama would be the next President. No, Keith is not psychic but he held on to his faith and I am sure that even if Barack lost (God forbid), in Keith's eyes, Barack would still be his President and the magazine would still do well even for the simple fact that Barack is so gorgeously gracing it!
People like me, who were actually thinking of running away if the Republicans got another 4 years are naturally elated that we will have a change, even if it is just in the skin color of the President of the United States. So what if the White House gets painted black? Aren't residents of houses entitled to remodel, redesign, and revamp? I actually like the idea of a Black and White House - not only would it show Barack's true colors, it would also speak to the unification that we have for centuries been fighting for.

Anyway, hotels in Washington DC are already booked solid based on the highly anticipated Presidential Inauguration events and if you do not have at least $1500 per night for a hotel, then you may as well start securing your spot on the street from NOW. It is going to be CROWDED and there is not much that all the security in the world can do to make it less hectic. Everyone is scrambling to get their tickets to the many Inauguration events, but I am just trying to get a ticket to go to Jamaica for REBEL SALUTE. The way I look at it, I am claustrophobic and wherever I end up on January 20, 2009, it will be like I am RIGHT in DC living in the moment so this will be the one time that I do not mind living vicariously through the masses!

With that said, please be safe out there. Do not think for a moment that everyone in the world is smiling or glad that Barack Obama won and always remember that even though OBAMA is the hottest man in the world right now, he also has the HOTTEST seat to fill, so pray for him as he endeavors to give us the change he promised in the next four years!

On Friday, October 17, North Capitol Collaborative Inc. celebrated ten years of service to families in Washington DC by staging their Anniversary Gala themed "Yesterday's Challenges, Today's Successes, Tomorrow's Dreams". It was an incredible evening complete with a Reception and Silent Auction, Dinner, Entertainment by The Kosmo Defacto Show, Presentation of Awards, Live Music and Dancing.

On opening the evening after the wonderful performance of the Smothers Dance Ensemble, Sylvia Matthews, Chair of the Anniversary Committee welcomed everyone to the event and promised that “unlike Wall Street, the children will not fail”. Her sentiments were echoed by many throughout the night, including NCCI’s Treasurer, Herbert Collins who stated that NCCI does what they do so well with support of the community which allows them to protect and serve the children who are valued so much.

Master of Ceremonies, Thomas Gore thanked NCCI for allowing him to serve as Emcee for the night and stated that “I always knew there was something special about Ward 5 and always believed in that neighborhood”. Throughout the night, he reiterated the importance of NCCI’s definition of servitude – “the act of being devoted to another or cause” and applauded NCCI for being servant warriors who ensured that each and every child and family are safe and protected.

NCCI’s work over their ten year span was visually represented in a slide show directed by NCCI’s Community Engagement Director Tony Dugger. A report on NCCI’s community agenda and future plans was presented by Therman Walker (Chair of NCCI Board of Directors) and Sylvia Matthews. Keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Lewis Anthony was very engaging and edifying in his delivery. He spoke about the importance of Celebration, Concentration, and Commitment and stated that the greatest threat to our nation is children who are not loved and families who do not work. Dr. Anthony summed up the evening by saying “…the old stuff still works. It does not require a dime, but it requires HEART” and he charged everyone in attendance to revert to the older ways of using heart to be effective.

Ward 5 Councilmember, Harry Thomas congratulated NCCI on their ten years of untiring service and devotion to the community and youth and commented that Washington DC is a better place to reside because of organizations like NCCI. Councilmember Thomas assisted with presenting the 5 community awards which were awarded to:

· The Bost and Smith Families: Families of the Year

· Rev. Dr. Lewis Anthony: The Brenda Strong-Nixon Leadership Award

· Beverly Estes: The Rick Sowell Community Activist Award

· Rev. Dr. Judith & Bishop Charles Farmer: The Ed Nesbit Community Service Award

· Thomas Blanton: the 10^th Anniversary Pioneer Award

NCCI’s Executive Director, Carmen Robles-Inman was visibly overcome with love and pride in her speech and thanked everyone especially the founding members of the organization who laid the groundwork for the organization to thrive. She thanked each and every staff, partner, board member, and family for working with her during her tenure to ensure that the mission of the organization was carried out and stated that though there have been many tribulations, NCCI has many success stories and will continue to serve the families of Bloomingdale, Chinatown, Edgewood/Eckington, LeDroit Park, Mt. Vernon Square, Shaw, and Truxton Circle with dedication and love. She thanked the Gala Planning Committee, event Coordinators - Joy Jenson and Tanya Blue, and all the staff and community partners who made the event possible.

There was a memoriam for the late Nancy Williams who was the Secretary of the Board for NCCI. Ms. Williams passed one week before NCCI’s 10^th anniversary celebration but her contribution to the Washington DC community and her passion for children will never be forgotten.

The Kosmo Defacto Show closed the night out with live music and patrons danced until the early hours of the following morning.

The Power of Networking & The Imporance of Giving Back

I hope things have been great for you since we last connected. Each week as I sit to write my editorial for my newsletter and what sometimes becomes my blogpost, my fingers take on a life of their own and what I originally intended to write about gets thrown by the wayside.

This week I am making an extra effort to stick to the script but in this area, there is just too much going on and since I have not found a way to clone myself and I don't want to overwhelm you, I will just give you bits and pieces of information and hopefully you will fill in the blanks or do some additional research on your own.

Thanks to Tony Java for inviting me to host the DC Reggae Awards Voting Launch last Friday at Nativity Hall. It was great to see so many of you out enjoying reggae in all forms and it was really heartwarming to see Java setting out once again to recognize so many individuals for their work in the DMV area! Tony Java is someone truly committed to his mission and I am thankful that I was recognized and won an award this year for Community Service. February 2009 will be the 12th year of the DC Reggae Awards, so please visit www.DCReggaeAwards.com and VOTE for your favorite promoter, selector, reggae singer, group, etc.

Recently, I was asked to share what I know about networking to a wonderful group of people, and it was in that moment when I was sharing that it really hit me - there is power in networking especially if done correctly! The sharing of information took me back to my very early stages of being a social butterfly at around 10 years old when I was on the verge of developing the gift of being very brazen, outgoing and resourceful. At that time, I am not even sure if "networking" was used unless people were talking about "the interconnection of computer systems". It was all about staying in tune and in touch with your community, being active in Youth Fellowship, and trying to get my peers involved in one of many the extra-curricular activities I was involved in. A lot of years have passed since those innocent days, but I have realized that even from the tender age of 10, I have been doing the things necessary to get me to the point where I am somewhat of an effective networker. The act of developing contacts, sharing information, and connecting people has become second nature to me and while I do not profess to be an expert at networking, I know a little "supm supm".

Here are 5 tips that have become part of MY personal recipe for succesful networking.

Please remember that there is an abundance of opportunities for everyone. Don't try to step on other people's toes and be unethical in your quest to "network" and if one door closes in your face, remember that many more are open

Network with professionalism and integrity. Do not just network because you want something - make networking a life skill

Always arm yourself with business cards and other marketing material whenever you leave the house - you never know who you might run into

Don't get stuck into your personal box or circle - get out of your comfort zone and mix and mingle with new groups but also be very selective about the groups and companies you "mix up" with.

Always be generous with information and don't hide it from others. You are not the only one who wants access to pertinent information.

I hope that each of you who are reading this, sees the value in networking regardless of your age, profession or life goals.

Never Too Much

I hope you had a great week since we last connected. I feel like I have been running a very loooooooong marathon and decided to quit at the rest stop before the race was over!

Congratulations to Crossroads for putting on yet another GREAT Reggae Festival this past Sunday. Some felt that two reggae festivals a week after each other might have been too much, but I am here to tell the naysayers that there is no such thing as too much music, especially good reggae music! I anticipated the crowd and vibes especially since Crossroads has been doing this for some time. What I did not anticipate was the loooooong walk due to too many cars and too little parking spaces, the heat which had me and many others sweating like pigs, and seeing folks cussing because they had to take their cameras back to their cars. I felt that the latter was a bit extreme and I am sure that all the performers are accustomed to having fans take their pictures, but perhaps there was a method to that madness in Crossroads' minds. Media staff of course, were allowed to bring their cameras and almost ALL phones have a built-in camera, so...U dun know!

Big up to allllll the people I saw - did not realize I knew so many people until my mouth got tired of saying "Heeeeeeyyyyyyy, what's up?". Special big ups to the JNA crew, Big Rome and Ras I-Dream, Kim Bey and Ziah, and my Guyanese sparring partner "B" who had not been to a festival in two years and a reggae festival in about five years (told you I was gonna talk about you, LOL)!

So there is no doubt about it - Buju Banton aka Gargamel is one of the most consistent and best performing reggae artists to hit the stage EVER! Buju closed the show in excellent form and style - singing, dancing, and djing sooooo many hits from 1992 to present day that many of us did not mind one bit that Maxi Priest did not show up (no fault of Crossroads'). Buju may have grown locks and is seemingly more spiritual than he was back in the day but he is as frisky as ever and kept the crowd in a frenzy as he sang from his many albums including the popular "Til Shiloh"...segue - Shiloh Band was BAAADDDDD!

Though Buju did not do his signature and controversial hit "Boom Bye Bye" he did make reference to the "f'ing batty man dem who kill Rraw Dawg because of bad mind". One badword never killed anyone before and sometimes one is needed for emphasis. Yuh know how much rhaatid badwud ME did cuss when mi hear seh dem did kill Rraw Dawg?

Thanks to Buju and the other artistes like DeMarco and Serani who reminded us of one of our promising "fallen soldiers" whose life was cut down much too soon.

It was great to feel the island vibes and see folks eating guineps and drining coconut water from the coconut (weh dem get dem from?). More love to DJ Super Slice (he played the best music ever during the breaks).

Next time I would like to see DeMarco and Serani performing alongside a Band. There is something about singing to tracks at a major reggae festival which just does not do it for me.

What to wear to a 70s theme party...hmmm

Okaaaay Family,

I have been getting many calls from people asking what they should wear to my 70s party on Saturday, September 20 and I keep saying, SOMETHING 70S...duh, LOL!

What I love about the 70s is that it was the liberation era and a time when women chose whatever they wanted to wear (trousers, minis, maxis, midis, halter tops, mid-rifts, hot pants, cat suits, jumpsuits, hippy dresses, granny dresses, wide belts, empire waistline dresses, leg warmers, track shorts, tank tops, platform shoes, clogs, etc. etc). Can you imagine getting dressed while daring your man to tell you to change outfit? The image of him sitting over there trying to tell you that your mini is too short, or your maxi is too long is cracking me up!...Talking bout "babe, why dont you flip your hair tonight" and then you say "Honey, like NO...I am rocking a headband tonight" LOL...I wish I was more than a baby in the 70s because I can see myself reinventing myself 70s style on the daily! So, ladies, for the 70s look - think bold floral prints, psychedelic prints, knitwear, polyester, and always think FOXY as in Pam Grier as Foxy Brown.

The easy alternative is to wear some nice tie-die jeans, or colorful shirt, and a shoes with the heel a little bigger than normal but that is like soooo boring! The Thrift Store can be your best friend now but if you are trying to win the prize for the best dressed female, then opt for a super-sexy catsuit, jumpsuit or micro mini - I am sure the guys will vote for you!

Congrats to Tanya Powell who won last year (Tanya is rocking the black velvet jumpsuit with the broad red belt).

MEN: This is your time to get those side-burns you can never grow; have an afro instead of the bald look you sport on the regular; or experimment with a perm (very YUCKY but fun!). Go for belly shirts, converse sneakers, bright colored suits, tie-die shirts, cut-off jeans, white knee socks, floral shirts, psychedelic shirt, dashikis, work boots, coordinated two-piece track suits, pimp hats, maxi coats, or try something uber-dynamic like the lime green spandex pants with the aquarium shoes as worn by Dana Friend last year who won the best dressed male, LOL.

Thinking about men in bell bottom jeans is giving me the hots so those of you who are daring, please oblige me! If you have muscular thighs, you absolutely HAVE to rock bell bottom jeans or track shorts, LOL...

As you can see, in the 70s it was kinda like "anything goes" so do not come to the party in REGULAR dress, at least pay tribute to me and all the other 70s babies and wear an afro for crying out loud! The psychedelic top Khani is wearing was purchased at Party City for $19.99 and Mariel is wearing a dress typically worn today but it has that 70s look to it!

In search of the American Dream

Friends,

Last week was all about the Democratic National Convention and Obama-mania. Last Thursday was probably the first time that most if not all events came to an abrupt halt so that patrons who ventured out of their living rooms could witness Barack Obama's acceptance speech which came exactly 45 years after the famous "I Have A Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. Not one to get too deep into politics, I deliberately avoided writing anything about the upcoming elections prior to last week because mass media was already doing a heck of a job of it and unless you were cut off from civilization, you already knew the "runnings". However, last Thursday as I sat inside Zanzibar on the Waterfront watching the big screen TV with that dashing, charismatic and eloquent bi-racial man called Barack Obama being the center of attention, I fast developed a penchant for politics and could not stop the tears that fell as he spoke about keeping the American Dream alive!

I was turned on in ways I never thought possible (get your minds out of the gutter) and cheered perhaps more than I did when Usain Bolt broke the 100M world record in Beijing. As I sat and watched the biography of Barack Obama and the entire 42-minute speech delivered in front of about 84,000 supporters and the kazillion others I knew were stuck in front of their TVs worldwide, I kept thinking how lucky I am to be alive to be witnessing this piece of history in the making! How can any sensible black person not feel pride and vindication to see a black 47 year old product of a single mother handling himself so well and rallying the largest DNC crowd ever as he accepted his nomination as the Presidential candidate?

When Dr. King shared his dream of his four little black children one day living in a nation where they are judged by the content of the character and not the color of their skin, many other black and white parents like Obama's white mother had the same dream too and Barack was just 2 years old then! Even though I was not even a thought when Dr. King delivered that speech 45 years ago, dreams of racial equality and the possibility that a black man can one day be one of the most powerful men in the world are closer to reality for me because of all the work that Dr. King and other black people before even Obama put in. Dr. King said "...and so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream".

Many of us are today still dreaming that American Dream and now in 2008, Barack Obama is the man whose speech will also become American rhetoric, and he is the man who my son and your children will remember as they cross over into adulthood and think back on the historic speech that they sat and watched when they would normally be tuned to BET or the Disney Channel on August 28...unbelievable! Just going home to have my son tell me that he watched the ENTIRE speech blew me away and made me fully come to grips with the beauty of what Obama is doing for people all over. I am truly touched despite wearing my hard shell these days, so in my mind, Obama is the man!

Last Thursday as I watched the speech and observed the people around me who were totally transfixed by Obama and quiet except for the cheers, shouts, and applause ever so often when he bought home one of his many touchdowns, I forgot for a hot minute that we were in a CLUB, DRINKING, and we CAME TO PARTY! That was when I had my epiphany moment - If nothing else, Barack Obama has truly presented us with hope and change we can believe in, and that my friends, is a GREAT thing!

Next step? Register to vote..."Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote" (George Jean Nathan). As Barack said in his speech, "eight is enough!".

On to other matters...I hope you had a great holiday weekend. Mine was fantastic and I am still recovering. I think I may have overdone it a little but it was still a balanced weekend for me - lots of sleep, lots of partying, lots of food, and lots of exercise!

Boothe owned the night - JNA's Independence Gala

And so, as we ended the week in DC with Independence celebrations, the Independence Gala hosted by the Jamaican Nationals Association was the icing on the black, green and gold cake!

The evening started with the complimentary valet parking which was a nice touch that was at times a major hold up. L'Enfant Plaza is a very popular hotel and it seems as if a lot was going on there on Saturday because the "traffic" to the valet parking was akin to parts of 295 coming from DC on a Friday during rush hour. Imagine getting a hissy fit when dressed in an elegant evening gown...not a good look, and so we grinned and beared it, until I had to jump out of the truck and demand that our car be parked immediately! I guess I was anxious to get on the inside...No worries - as soon as patrons got the cars valet parked, we were greeted by one of the volunteers (who I am bigging up because he is my son, Khani) who directed us to the Gala center, and the whole valet parking experience was long forgotten!

The JNA's 46th Independence was very organized and there was no long waiting or commotion at the door or any part of the venue. Patrons were assisted by JNA's Gala committee members and volunteers who made sure the entire evening flowed effortlessly. Shout outs to volunteers - Keisha Largie, Khani Smith, Lydia McDaniel, Valisha Ward, and Megan Ward, and Therianna Ward who represented the Harriet's Girls.

The event started at 6:30pm with a reception which was a great opportunity for patrons to meet and greet JNA's

executive team and the special invited guests, feast on light fares, and get a quick drink before ushered into the Main Hall by Gala Chair, Tony Carr for the main event!

I have never heard either the US National Anthem or the Jamaican Anthem sung so beautifully and would like to thank the lovely young lady who did such a great job in delivering both anthems without missing a note!

Franklyn Burke, JNA's Parliamentarian led us in prayer and set the pace for a very beautiful evening. Dapper, distinguised, and direct as usual, Jamaica's Ambassador to the USA, Anthony Johnson made his speech short and spicy. Already he has won my vote because he exemplifies all things Jamaican! Mistress of Ceremonies, Maureen Bunyan graduated from being an honorary Jamaican to a full fledged Jamaican and testified that if bloodwork is needed, she is happy to comply.

JNA's President, Dr. Jacquie Mothersille Payne welcomed and thanked everyone for spending their Saturday evening with the JNA and reminded patrons of the JNA's mission and goals for 2008-2010. The guest of honor, Dr. Oswald Harding took us on a short historicial journey of Jamaica's achievements to date and reminded us that our independence is due largely in part by the hard work of our heroes who paved the way for us. The message was perfect and in line with the theme of the evening "A Link to the Past while Embracing the Future".

While patrons dined on rice and beans, veggies, salmon, plantains, and chicken and sipped white and red wine, Sounds of Culture provided cultural Jamaican Entertainment which had me and others rocking in rememberance of festival celebrations back home.

Patrons were pleasantly surprised and some were forced to abandon their dinners and instead opt to dance when Honoree Ken Boothe, OD gave an impromptu performance. Mr. Boothe showed some fancy foot work and sang a slew of his hits such as "Puppet on a String", " Black, Gold and Green" and "Freedom Street" while engaging in conversation with the head table and other patrons, much to the delight of the patrons who were mesmerized by his charm energy, and perfect use of patois to convey his sentiments and gratitude for being in Washington, DC. Ken Boothe owned the night and his performance was so infectious that he was invited for an encore. Mr. Boothe was also the recipient of an award for his contribution to Jamaican music.

Six JNA members were presented awards for outstanding contributions: Franklyn Burke, Carlton Drummond, Louis Hemans, Elise Thomas Morse, Stanley Tracey, and Gala co-chair and JNA's treasurer, Dena-Kay Brown who was again presented with the President's Award for the second year in a row. The JNA paid tribute to the late David Seymour Greaves who was a longstanding member since 1974 and JNA's President from 1990-1991.

The night ended with Bobby's Music Machine playing excellent music which kept patrons dancing the night away until 1:00am.

Congratulations to Yasmin Smith on winning the door prize from a ticket which was sold by yours truly. Congratulations to Moye Stephenson on winning the raffle prize courtesy of Jamaica Tourist Board. Thanks to the Paparazzi for Hire for taking such great instant pictures of the patrons, and thanks to C Paul Earle and Derrick Scott for always taking great pictures of Jamaican events! Special thanks to Ethlynn Grant for being my "date" for the evening - we had a great time from the moment we left the house!

JNA - working hard to keep Jamaicans in the spotlight!

If staying true to the mission of fostering and engaging in community service was an order, it is fair to say that in 2007, JNA was very obedient. The association not only met - but in instances, exceeded some of the 2007 objectives set which included increasing charitable programs, mobilizing and increasing membership, building and encouraging a cohesive team, and increasing efforts to establish a community center. Under the leadership of President, Moreen Wallace, JNA worked hard and fast in 2007 despite some of the challenges encountered and have paved the way for the successful building of "Jamaica House DC" - a home to enhance the quality of life, promote independence and self sufficiency, while perserving Jamaican culure and heritage. The 2007 Executive Team consisted of: Moreen Wallace, President; Lewis Buchanan,Vice President; Claudette Henry, Secretary; Jennifer Asher, Treasurer; Enid Russell, Asst. Treasurer; Rosie “Peppy” Parke, Public Relations Officer; Moye Stephenson, Recording Secretary; and Jacqueline Payne, Immediate Past-President.

In January 2007, JNA started off the year with “Heat in the Place” – a collaboration between the Embassy of Jamaica, JNA, and other groups. The event was very successful and JNA was able to donate funds raised to Howard University’s Boarders for Babies program.

JNA raised over $450 for the Arthur Wint "Sponsor a Child" Program that benefited the less fortunate students in Jamaica; facilitated a bus trip to the Penn Relays in Pennsylvania, PA ; and awarded $2,000 in book scholarships to 4 neede college students from various colleges and universities in the Washington Metropolitan area.

Clothing and personal care items were sent to Howard University Boarder Babies, Washington D.C., and shipped to Montego Bay Women’s Center and the School of the Blind in Jamaica.

JNA hosted a Picnic for the seniors at Springvale Senior Living, Silver Spring MD. Springvale Senior Living Home has been the home for JNA's General Meeting and from time to time, JNA gives back to the Home to show their appreciation and community service.

Rosie "Peppy" Parke, JNA's Public Relations Officer hosted a Thanksgiving Can Drive event at one of her monthly Caribbean RIDDIMZ events, and donated over 80 cans of food to seniors at Springvale Senior Living.

JNA hosted a Family Fun Day & Business Expo in Gaithersburg, MD; raised over $10,000 towards Jamaica House DC, and hosted their 45th Independence Gala and Fundraiser in Washington DC. This event attracted guests such as General Colin Powell, Mayor Adrian Fenty, and many others.

JNA ended 2007 with their celebratory holiday party which held at the Double Tree Hotel in NW, Washington DC. The holiday party was also an opportunity to say goodbye to the former Executive team, and welcome the 2008-2010 Executive team. This event was facilitated by the support of member, Tanya Powell who is an employee of Double Tree where the event was held; Moreen Wallace who rallied the support of many sponsors; and the Planning Committee who ensured that JNA members and other invited guests had an evening to remember. JNA's own Richard Daley provided the music for night, and patrons danced the night away until about 2:00am in the morning!

At the function, an award was presented to the outgoing president Moreen Wallace for her outstanding leadership. Other award certificates were presented to Lewis Buchanan (Vice President), Moye Stephenson (Recording Secretary), and Jennifer Asher (Treasurer) as an appreciation for their service to the organization. In introducing the new board, the outgoing President Moreen Wallace, urged the new executives and members of JNA to stay focused on the mission of the association and challenged the organization to increase its charitable programs especially the book scholarship which was established in honor of former Jamaican Ambassador to the United States, Professor Gordon Shirley.

Led by Dr. Jaqueline Mothersille Payne, President; the 2008-2010 Executive Team consists of Ian Harvey, Vice President; Dena-Kay Brown, Treasurer; Claudette Henry, Executive Secretary; Joyell Arscott, Recording Secretary; Rosie “Peppy” Parke, Public Relations Officer; Franklyn Burke, Parliamentarian ; and Moreen Wallace, Immediate Past President.

Since the beginning of 2008, the Executive team has been busy working on strategies to (a) increase membership (b) obtain property to establish “Jamaica House” (c) increase JNA’s visibility both locally and in Jamaica, by increasing community service (d) devise mechanisms for engaging with Jamaican immigrants new to the National Capital Region, and (e) maintain the Dr. Gordon Shirley Book Scholarship. To this end, the activities so far for 2008 have included JNA working very closely with the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, Jamaican Association of Maryland, and other groups. It is through cross-collaboration and working together with other groups that the JNA hopes to do more for Jamaicans both here and abroad.

The highlights of 2008 to date include:

A Penn Relays Bus Trip in April. JNA has been traveling to the Penn Relays for a few years now and this year, a packed bus with 55 people traveled to witness one of the most highly anticipated college athletic games in history! Attendees were treated to a Jamaican breakfast of fried dumplings and calaloo and saltfish with a variety of beverages. A 50/50 raffle was held on the bus with the winner splitting the proceeds to the JNA building fund. One of the highlights of the trip was the seating at the finish line. JNA thanks Ms. Beverly Thomas for coordinating this bus trip to the Penn Relays once again!

The 13th Annual Family Fun Day and Picnic was held on July 13 at the Parklawn Picnic Area in Wheaton with over 250 people in attendance. Admission included complimentary food and drinks which consisted of jerked chicken, BBQ chicken, fish, vegetables, rice and peas, macaroni cheese, plantains, corn, hot dogs, and hamburgers. Food was catered by Island Pride Restaurant in Gaithersburg, and donations were made by JNA members. Ice cream was donated by York Castle Ice Cream. The children had a field day with activities such as moonbounce and various races and games; while the adults engaged in bingo, dominos, and loudi. There were many prizes and surprises and a raffle. The Andrew Air Force Health team was on hand to perform blood pressure screening, cholesterol checks, and other health services. Music was provided by JNA's own, Richard Daley.

On June 16-17, 2008, JNA’s President, Jacquie Payne and JNA member, Jackie Bromfield attended the 3rd Biennial Jamaican Diaspora Conference 2008, Borderless Partnership for Development in Kingston, Jamaica. Over 700 delegates from Canada, Cuba, United Kingdom, United States and South Africa were in attendance. Youth leaders from the Diaspora were in attendance and facilitated one of the breakout sessions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade hosted the conference. The days and evenings were packed with various types of activities. The conference culminated with a gala dinner dance with music by Fab 5 and Mr. Harry Belafonte as Guest Speaker.

On Saturday, June 28, 2008, JNA was one of the proud sponsors for the “Natural Mystik Reggae Band” featuring the works of our Legendary Bob Marley at DC Carnival. JNA’s name and website was proudly displayed on banners visible on both sides of the float as well as on excellent quality T-Shirts. A few members of JNA had fun dancing as part of the float, while advertising JNA by wearing the T-Shirts and distributing over 450 JNA applications and flyers for the Annual JNA Family Fun Day. The JNA welcomes your participation in this effort next year.

On July 1, 2008, members of JNA’s Executive Team met with His Excellency, Honorable Anthony Johnson, Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Mrs. Sharon Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff and Mrs. Natalie Campbell- Rodriquez, Community Relations Officer. The meeting was held at the Embassy of Jamaica. The primary purpose of the meeting was to officially welcome the Embassy’s new administration as well as introduce JNA. Ambassador Johnson was excited about JNA’s overarching goal of securing a building in the National Capital Area for a much needed cultural center or “home”…JAMAICA HOUSE, Washington, DC for Jamaican Nationals and Friends of Jamaica.

On Friday, July 5, members from JNA and other Jamaicans were spotted having fun at the residence of the Jamaican Ambassador as the Embassy held a 4th of July cookout for Jamaicans in the area. A great time was had by all and persons who did get the opportunity to meet and greet Mr. Johnson and his staff also witnessed the Ambassador’s Jamaican hospitality – including feasting on full course meals, consuming extremely potent rum punch and other beverages. Mr. Johnson’s feet were clearly made for dancing because he spent much of the day dancing up a storm. A great time was had by all!

Cultivating good habits - not overrated!

Friends, This week I was going to write only on the lighter side, but I changed my mind. Heavy will come later but the light part is giving kudos to Bertha Cross on the Caribbean Sounds Marathon held on Saturday, Carib United on the short and sexy party also held on Saturday, and Jamaican Promotional Company on the wonderful Jamaica Day Reggae Festival held on Sunday. I could not get around to all the events I wanted to, including the JNA picnic, but it was nice seeing everyone at those three events. Shouts outs to Stan The Man, Elaine, Carlos, Robert and Rosie Cheewah, and Karl Haughton. Let us continue to have a safe and fun-filled summer!

Cultivating Good Habits:

The other day while trying to break what was fast becoming a bad habit, I started pondering on why it is so easy to pick up bad habits but extremely difficult to cultivate the good habits that will ultimately make us a better person. There I was, thinking about kicking the habit for a couple of months but procrastinating. You know how it is when at times you KNOW that something is bad for you, but for some insane reason, you cannot seem to stop and just keep doing it? EXACTLY - what is wrong with us? Anyway, I prayed and meditated on it because frankly, I know I wanted to leave that one behind...it was not making me grow as a person, and I had much better things to do with my valuable time. This foolish habit I had picked up started affecting my aura so after psyching myself out, I fast realized that I did not want to become that person who constantly complains about something but does nothing to change it. When prayer did not seem to be enough, I took a trip to the spa to find my spiritual center, and it was while I was totally by myself in a peaceful environment that the epiphany came to me - it is when I am in those moments of my life when I am not happy about what is going on, that I am most inclined to jump out and pick up a bad habit. BINGO - I felt liberated, and with positive self-affirmations and determination, I kicked the habit to the curb!

That episode led me to this blog, and now I feel inclined to ask you to also ask yourself: "How do I control the urge to indulge in bad habits especially when I am not feeling good about myself?" That is not an easy question to answer and may very well be another blog, but for me it involves finding calm, my spiritual center, and re-affirming myself that I have the power to cultivate good habits that will ultimately define me. For you, it could mean surrounding yourself with more positive influences, abstinence, or even fasting. Talking to a confidant(e), engaging in an activity that gives you joy, and prayer always works. We are unique and there is never a quick fix for a usual manner of behavior but we have the power to effect positive change in our own lives.

So, in the spirit of cultivating good or better habits, I will leave these three words with you: Control, Commitment, and Consistency. I have heard the saying "you are what you do" and I am inclined to believe that to be true. Think about that for a hot minute - If you consistently do good, then isn't it fair to assume that you will be thought of as a good person; if you truly commit yourself to a task, hobby, or person, don't you think that you will be labeled as a committed person?; and what about control? Many of us are control-freaks, and want to control everyone but ourselves. How dare we lack self-control but want to control others? How about trying to really control the urge to pick up the bad habits and use that power to choose better ones? Food for thought...

Okay, that is enough for this week. Sometimes heavy is necessary as it allows us to look at things from a more serious perspective and free ourselves. Cultuivating good habits is never over-rated! As usual, I am appreciative of your continued support and welcome your feedback.

Welcome to July, the 2nd half

Family:

Welcome to July and the second half of 2008. This is the best time to revisit resolutions/goals set at the beginning of the year. Perhaps some resolutions will not be met; perhaps some of them will be transferred to 2009; and perhaps some of them should not have been on the list in the first place. Be that as it may, independence is something that is within everyone's span of control, so consider spending the next 6 months in 2008 reclaiming your independence.

I invite you to think about some of the ways you can get back on track (if you have fallen off) and take control of yourself and your self. Oftentimes, we depend on others to make our lives worthwhile, and we fall into the trap of thinking that someone else controls our happiness...RUBBISH! An independent person does not depend on others' opinions or guidance in conduct; an independent person certainly does not rely on others for their care or livelihood; and an independent person definitely understands that dependency results in allowing other people to manage YOUR life.

All of this is positive energy so I hope you get it, but if it means that reclaiming your independence involves cutting some ties, so be it. Stop playing around and get serious about YOU.

This week, we are focusing on reclaiming independence in the following areas: Love, Finance, and Spirituality, so I hope my few words will be of some help to you.

The Love Jones Syndrome:

So, you are in a great relationship and in love with your significant other who totally consumes you... In fact, you love spending so much time with your "Boo" that you neglect all the people and things that truly matter to YOU. Before you lose yourself in another person, remember that relationships are healthier when each person has personal time, personal projects, and personal goals. So, pull away at times, and take time to give yourself some TLC. Don't be afraid - real love will be waiting for you after you reclaim your independence and take care of YOU.

Becoming Financially Independent:

The vast majority of us dream of becoming financially independent. Actually, some of us dare not dream that big - we just dream of days when we are no longer living from paycheck to paycheck and are able to take a long vacation without hyperventilating about returning to the "real world". I am no expert on the subject of becoming financially independent, but I am educating myself on getting there real soon. One of the best things you can do for yourself financially is to live within your means. Don't splurge with your friends with money on dinners you cannot afford; do not spend all your money at the mall; and do not fall prey to many of the "get rich quick" scams out there. Get a financial advisor, spend wisely, and SAVE. It takes years, sacrifice, and money to become truly financially independent, but it is a journey worth taking NOW.

The Spiritual Connection:

Oftentimes people get bent out of shape when SPIRITUALITY is mentioned. It does not mean you have to go to church, the Buddhist Temple, or get baptized (even though religion and spirituality can go hand in hand). Spirituality is really about getting to know yourself and finding a connection with your inner self, so you understand who you truly are. Finding that spiritual connection is one of the best gifts you can give yourself to be truly independent. Getting spiritual allows you to develop your independent style and make higher and better decisions of the heart. So, always take time for you and your spirit. Take time away from your hectic (or not so hectic) schedule to rest your mind and think about enjoying life in the moment. Take a spiritual journey by taking long walks on a beach or going on a long solitary drive sans the crazy music. Meditation brings you closer to your spiritual center, so it is something worth trying.

For an easy fix, just take a couple evenings off, go home and shut down everything that creates the regular "background music", submerge yourself in the bath with some scented candles for a good 15 minutes, and be one with yourself - "whoooosaaaaaaah". A healthy spirit makes good for the heart, body, mind, and soul!

So, in the spirit of Independence Day, start reclaiming YOUR independence today. Be safe and HAPPY 4th OF JULY!

The White House thru Black Lens

Lovely people,

I am writing about this only because I feel I must - a visit to the White House had absolutely NO fascination for me personally because Obama is not in office as yet! Nevertheless when the opportunity presented itself...you know the rest!

As I have been telling you for sometime now, June is Caribbean American month and we as Caribbean folks have lots to be thankful for, despite the other stuff that is happening in the country. President George Bush (according to critics...a nuh ME seh suh) may not be good for much, but I have to hand it to him for being diligent in ensuring that the bill to make June Caribbean American Heritage month passed. More kudos to him for faciliating our trip to the White House today. Of course he was not there for the "chopping of BUSH", but that is another blog (insert smiley face here, LOL)...I wrote that on purpose, it is NOT a typo.

Noooooo, we did not get a tour of the White House - that place is HUGE! We had our meeting in the Indian Treaty Room in the Eisenhower wing.

Facts gathered today:

The Indian Treaty Room is the most expensive room in that wing; it took 9 years to be built and cost $500,000 back in 1871. The architecture is lovely and I could not stop taking pictures. Ironically, no indian treaties were signed in the Indian Treaty Room (no surprise there) BUT it was the room in which President Eisenhower made his first televised presentation back in the day! AMAZING...

Anyway, it was a lovely 2 hours. The speakers were all so eloquent, knowledgeable, and had some Caribbean connection so they could relate to what CAH month is all about. Hats off to Dr. Graham - a Jamaica who left Jamaica when he was 18 to attend school in the States. He is now 34 and working hard for the US through his job with DHHS and all the kazillion organizations he is connected to. He reminded us that we need to wake up and realize that whether are living living in our native Caribbean Island, Africa, or the USA, the number 2 health epidemics among Blacks are HIV/AIDS and heart disease. Of course, you don't need ME to remind you again about the importance of getting tested, eating right, and spreading the word about how people can live longer and healthier lives if they just do the bare essentials. Segue - Friday, June 27 is National HIV testing day so...GET TESTED!

So anyway, back to the White House...I had the pleasure of meeting the next two speakers in Tanzania so I wont say much about them except that one is the President of Goodworks who is working with some students on replicating some of the strategies of the EU into the CARICOM community. The other is a lovely female who is an expert at trade and development. She has roots in Antigua, Barbados, and Panama so she is a true Caribbean American. Names will come to me later...

It is always interesting to meet new friends and find out what they are doing in the community and today there were soooooo many Caribbean folks who are doing their thing - some who came all the way from NY just because they were paying tribute to the one and only - Dr. Nelson who is the brainchild behind Caribbean American Heritage month. It made me proud to be Caribbean (not American yet) and even prouder to work closely with Dr. Nelson!

Soooo, at the end of the two hours; at the end of the day; and at the end of June, no one deserves more praise than Dr. Claire Nelson for her work in ensuring that Caribbean American month is nationally recognized. Hats off to Dr. Nelson for allowing most of us to experience our first visit to the White House and for being creative, steadfast, and passionate about ensuring that Caribbean Americans are fully recognized in this country called the Land of Opportunity!

Hello Mama Africa...The Summit of a Lifetime!

It was titled "The Leon H. Sullivan Summit of Lifetime" and the destination was Tanzania, Africa! Over 400 charter delegates made the decision to sit on a flight for almost 24 hours and go to the Motherland. Some went for the actual conference, others went for the animals, most went for the experience, and what an awesome experience it was!

For many like myself, going back to our roots was the lifetime trip we hoped to take but never quite expected to actualize. Interestingly enough, visiting a country in Africa was #4 on my list of 15 things to do in 2008, so when the opportunity presented itself, I dropped everything and splurted!

Charter delegates like myself who left on May 28, had the opportunity to visit Ethiopia as our first stop. If the excitement at the airport and on Ethiopia Airlines (our host airline) was any indication of what was to come, we knew we were going to be changed for life. The good thing about traveling on our chartered flight is that everyone was ending up at the same place and we would be in the company of each other for the entire 10 days...making friends became super-easy. I was fortunate to know who my room-mate was before boarding the plane, because I had the opportunity to work on pre-conference assignments, so when I saw the lovely aspiring actress, Shauna Chin "mi skin ketch a fya!"...not only was she a yaadie, but we soon realized that both of us had absolutely NO SENSE and we would have more than our fair share of conversations, escapades, and african secrets!

Ethiopia, the cradle of the world, may not have been everyone's cup of "chai" but it gave us the once in a lifetime honor of visiting the National Palace in the presence of H.E. Ato Girma W. Giorgis, the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. We got to see how a King lives (complete with the throne, lions, and special chairs), and my table in particular was in awe of the dinner plates and silverware bearing the Lion of Judah insignia..."Ohhh, how lovely a set would look on MY dining table" I thought... (dream on Peppy, LOL).

For Jamaicans like myself, 2 days was just not enough time to fully immerse ourselves in the culture and feel the connection to Haile Selassie, but it was exciting going to dinner at Hebir Cultural Restaurant and visiting the Kuriftu Resort. I spent most of my free time shopping in the lobby of the Hilton Addis Ababa and could not get enough of the famous crosses, scarves, and anything which had the Lion of Judah imprinted on it. Interestingly enough, when I left Addis Ababa, it felt as if we were there for a week!

Next stop? Tanzania. From the moment the pilot announced that Mount Kilimanjaro was to the right, even those who slept FELT Africa! We arrived to the dancing and chanting of the Massai people at Kilimanjaro Airport and quickly realized that they were everywhere!

For me, the highlight of Tanzania was the visit to the Ngorongoro Crater. Yes, the trip was loooooong; the route was at times dangerous; and we were very high up and close to the edge of a precipice, but the sightings of the countryside, the Massai people, the art and craft, and the ANIMALS made the long ride pale in comparison! Giraffes, elephants, hippos, rhinos, lions, zebras, gazelles, wart hogs, wilderbeasts, buffalos, babboons, flamingoes, and all types of birds were seen, all living in harmony in the wide open wild - only in Africa!

The conference itself was highly publicized and the PR was incredible because media from everywhere was literally EVERYWHERE! The paparazzi came out in full force and it was not because we were in the presence of Jessie Jackson, Chris Tucker, the Presidents of Zanzibar and Tanzania, the Hong Kong delegation, the Masters, Ambassador Andrew Young, ex Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Hon. P.J. Patterson, and the other over 100 ministers of various offices, it was because of the work and legacy of the late Honorable Rev. Dr. Leon H. Sullivan.

We were kept busy with an event every night, where we were treated to endless food, drinks, and entertainment! Charter delegates ventured to various tours, villages, and markets to get their fill of Africa. The exhibitors and attendees at the conference traveled from many different African countries and the hospitality and warmth of the people kept a permanent smile on my face!

I did have the time of my life, and I owe it all to Ann Graham of the Leon Sullivan Foundation.

HerStory: March is Women's History Month

2008 is moving right along, and March is upon us. I don't know about you but it seems as if I was just making new year's resolutions last week, and yesterday I was saying welcome to BLACK History month, and today...well today, we are already in March - the beautiful month where we celebrate WOMEN! That makes me smile, that makes me proud to be a woman, and yes, that makes me ecstatic to be among the mothers of civilization!

My Assistant, Mariel and I THANK YOU wholeheartedly for being a part of Caribbean RIDDIMZ's special BLACK HISTORY celebration last night!

First and foremost, thanks to MOMOS for hosting us - this was our first event at Momos and we LOVE it, despite some venue "issues" that are being worked on as we speak. Please share your "Momos experience" with us as we work to make things smoother for all of us!

BIG thanks to our host with the most, CJ Gross who not only helped us to get our networking on, but educated us on how we can proactively move forward with creating harmony and balance in our life, whether it be for a relationship, a regular job, or the passion work that we aspire to do! Let us not get to that place CJ spoke about - the place where we hate our job sooooooooooooo much that the very stapler that sits on our desk, becomes our worst enemy! *shivering*..."I hate you...you...you...stapler you!"

CJ's next workshop is on Thursday, February 28 at the Oxon Hill Library so please be sure to send some folks or go yourself if you need to know "HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT JOB IN 90 DAYS".
